i cleaned my cat’s (sammy) ears for the first time and he used 6 q-tips on both sides. is that normal for the 1st time?

For what reason ar eyou cleaning his ears? Is there “dirt” inside?
You really should never use q-tips in your cats ears. They could easily be spooked and jerk and you could poke to deep and really hurt them. It’s best to only clean the outside of the ear with a cotton ball.
If for somereason there is “dirt” deep in the canal, where you might be tempted to use a q-tip, then there is likely another problem (such as earmites or a yeast infection) that should be addressed and treated appropriately by a vet.

Don’t use Q-tips they hurt the cats ears! USe cotton balls and i was probley normal but use cotton balls from now on!
