In case anyone is interested, I wanted to give an update on the cat tree I decided to design and build myself. We actually made progress this weekend! We just have the first two levels done, although the house still needs to be attached to its base. Cost so far is $6.00 for the wood (purchased at Habitat for Humanity’s Restore) and $28 for the legs.
I’ll post pics in a comment.

Beastmaster, I finally found the pictures and will try to post them. Keep us posted on your creation. I'm anxious to see it done.

Our cats love the old speaker box. Always a couple curled up in it. The condos were for the ferals and it was a perfect place for them to "chill" aways from the hustle and bustle of our house when they first arrived. We set them up in our basement and they would go down there if we had company. They still spend afternoons down there but they all come up at night to sleep with us or in the living room.

Hopefully it didn’t need to be said, but I will of course be adding finishing touches like carpet or fabric and paint. Just in case anyone looked at all the mis-matched wood and thought, “ach, the poor little kitties! Their mama has hideous taste!” This would be in an Irish accent for some reason.

LoL - I can hear it... :) Hey - are you doing this from some sort of plans you found online, or are you just designing as you go/yourself? I'd like to build one of these after we get into a house & have the space.

LOL! too funny! But I'm sure your cats could care less about the mismatched wood. They seem very happy with the results already! Catsofmany built some condos for her cats out of wood crates and a huge speaker box her neighbor was throwing out. They came out really cute. She painted little foot prints on the sides.

I’m kinda/sorta following a general plan but it’s mostly being designed on the fly. What I did was find a tree that was as close as possible to what I wanted. And then I rearranged it for the girls’ preferences. Like Poppy isn’t big on leaping around and she loves to be enclosed (but not too tightly), so I put the house on the second level but I also made it 18×18x18 because she’s a big girl and most houses were really tiny. She’d never use them. For Sophie who’s a nut, I’m going to be adding ramps so when she’s doing her wind sprints she can just go up up and up!
There’s going to be another flat level on top of the house (I think) but from there I’m going to have a ramp placed against the wall, and that’s going to lead to a shelf which will go over the door, and possibly another going in the opposite direction toward the bookshelf. That is, if I can stop my husband from making that “hshhhhh” sound when he thinks about all the holes we’ll be making in the wall.

LOL....the hole in wall issue! Just tell him how important it IS for the kitties! And holes can be fixed. A little patch compound and good as new! We did that in our basement. We have a shelf that goes under the stairs to another room where the little rodies live. I wanted to put a walk around upstairs on our main living level for the cats but hubby had a fit! I saw that on a show once where the woman rescued cats and the whole house had built in walk arounds and condos built near the ceiling. It was done beautifully!
