Less expensive grain-free food Solid Gold Indigo Moon
I found another grainless dry diet, Solid Gold Indigo Moon.
At about $30 for a 15 lb bag rather than $40 for a 12 lb bag this stuff is quite a lot cheaper than Wellness Core. The ingredients aren’t as high-quality though - Indigo Moon is based on chicken meal as the first ingredient, rather than deboned chicken. And I’m a little surprised at the canola oil, I use this stuff to cook all the time and in salad dressings but I’ve never seen it in a pet food so maybe some of the nutrition buffs here can comment on that.
There are some weird veggie ingredients like broccoli but they’re so far down the list they are below taurine, which makes me think there isn’t much of them.
It also has a LOT more fiber, at 3% compared to maybe 1% in Wellness Core, so if your cat has issues with hairballs or digestion this might be a better option. I know someone here said something about a cat that ended up constipated on Wellness Core so I thought I’d mention this.
It also has no food dyes, or the nasty preservatives BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin which is always a definite plus compared to a lot of your “grocery” brands.
That said *for people on a stricter budget* looking to feed their cat something grain-free, this might be a viable alternative along with Blue Buffalo’s Blue Wilderness (which DOES have some oatmeal in it, but at least no corn, wheat, soy or rice) so I thought I’d mention it. I know I’ve seen it at petco, I can’t recall if it was at petsmart though I know they carry Solid Gold dog food.
It is quite nice to see more companies at least attempting to come out with some grainless options for pets and at different price ranges too, since not everyone can afford the absolute best thing on the shelf. I hope Solid Gold expands their canned cat food too as the only two they have on the shelf now are fishy foods, a poultry based grainless flavor would be welcome.

Looks to be like a good food but fiber is still low for cats that have colitis or constipation problems. Fiber needs to be in the area of 6% or 7%.

Maybe add some canned pumpkin or ground flaxseed?

Pumpkin and flaxseed don't work well as far as I've seen for cats with colitis and constipation. We even tried slippery elm for the cats with constipation problems. The only thing that has helped them a great deal has been the food with 7% fiber.
