Is it illegal to sell/eat cat/dog meat in the US?

5 Answers  |  Asked By: kekekitten   489

Hi, I thought this was a cat question, even if I add dog in there. I think this is a good question. When people say “Oh yeah, some Asian people eat cats and dogs”, is this true? What I mean is, if these Asian people do eat cats/dogs, then when they have there out-to-eat places, is it illegal to let people eat cat/dog meat from these resturants in the US? Any answere would help! (I was wondering this because my neighbor was like “yeah we’re importing asian dog meat! it’ll be a good change!” I was mortified and wondered if it were against the law).

I do know people around the world eat cat’s and dogs.

Here, I’ve copied this off of http://www.cbp.gov for you.

Food Products (Prepared)
You may bring bakery items and certain cheeses into the United States. The APHIS web site features a Travelers Tips section and Game and Hunting Trophies section that offers extensive information about bringing food and other products into the country. Many prepared foods are admissible. However, almost anything containing meat products, such as bouillon, soup mixes, etc., is not admissible. As a general rule, condiments, vinegars, oils, packaged spices, honey, coffee and tea are admissible. Because rice can often harbor insects, it is best to avoid bringing it into the United States.

So, from what I see, if cats and dogs are meat (which they are!!!) then there is probably a small chance that you are allowed to eat them.

Here is another copy from the same website that is also related:

Meats, Livestock, and Poultry
The regulations governing meat and meat products are very strict. You may not import fresh, dried, or canned meats or meat products from most foreign countries into the United States. Also, you may not import food products that have been prepared with meat.
The regulations on importing meat and meat products change frequently because they are based on disease outbreaks in different areas of the world. APHIS, which regulates meats and meat products as well as fruits and vegetables, invites you to contact them for more information on importing meats. You may write to USDA-APHIS Veterinary Services National Center for Import/Export (NCIE), 4700 River Road, Unit 40, Riverdale, MD 20737-1231; or call (301) 734-7830.

So now I guess it all depends!

I don’t know if it is illegal to sell cat or dog meat in the U.S. However, I know that some parts in China allow cat and dog meat to be sold.
But wait, don’t go off thinking that Asians are rabid people who love eating poor helpless animals. I actually am half asian, and eating cats and dogs is rare in Asian countries. But, if you really want to find out more info, I think the asian country that eats the most cat and dog meat is China. Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore almost NEVER NEVER eat dog meat. I think the only places were people actually rarely eat dog meat are Cambodia, Vietnam, the Phillipines, and China.

Hope this helps,

it's pretty common in thailand, too. my friend went there to do volunteer work with refugees from burma and wild dog was eaten. the refugees told her that they eat wild dog especially in the winter months because it's "warming". interesting. different cultures, different practices.

i guess maybe that means it's more common in burma than thailand, since they were burmese refugees...

I know in some cultures men eat dog meat because it's supposed to increase virility and women are not supposed to eat it.
