Cat urine is one of those lingering aromas that humans find very objectionable. To remove and neutralize the odor from your furniture, try washing your sofa cushion covers in the washing machine if they are removable. Add a cup of baking soda to the wash cycle, and throw in the covers inside-out. You can also try blotting the area with a mixture of white vinegar and warm water, using half of each to make a solution.
You will probably need to purchase a commercial product for neutralizing pet odors. Once the cat has urinated on the couch, it has marked the area as a proper place to “go” and will most likely continue the misbehavior as long as the scent is there. And remember, just because you can’t smell the urine doesn’t mean the cat can’t still smell it. Their olfactory systems are much more advanced than ours are. A good commercial product will neutralize the smell and not just mask it or cover it up, making the area less inviting to your cat. There are also products that will deter your cat from ever using an area for a restroom in the first place.

After trying many urine removers, we settled upon Natures Miracle. It works very well and removes all traces of urine because it’s made of enzymes that “eat” the urine.
You can buy it at Petsmart and many orhter retailers.

Another important part of removing urine is to find it all. Use a black light for that. The urine (and lots of things you didn’t know were there) will illuminate.
I use this one: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752959
You can just buy a black light at any store if you want to, but I use the little hand held one all the time because it goes anywhere fast and it’s easier.

What I’ve found is it doesn’t matter what the product reviews say but what your cat’s nose says. I’ve read over and over about products like Nature’s Miracle, Petrotech, etc., all enzymatic cleaners that get great reviews for working well. They did not help me. The only product that got cat urine out of my couch enough for my cat to stop peeing on it is OUT! Natural. It’s in the dog section at Wal-Mart. It is made with lemongrass and has a pleasant scent.
This is what I did:
I took the couch cushions off the couch, took the cover off the foam padding, soaked them with the OUT! and let them air dry. This takes a couple of days for the padding. I repeated the process and let them dry for a week. I put the covers back on the padding. I then put all my sofa cushions inside a twin-sized plastic mattress cover and returned it all to the sofa. Then I put a sheet over the cushions because you don’t want to sit on a plastic mattress cover, especially in the summer time.
The point of doing this was to give the cat a chance to learn that the sofa is not for peeing before exposing her to the cushions again. You may not need to be as aggressive as I was but I left the cover on my cushions for 18 weeks. I read somewhere (sorry, I can’t find the source) that you should cover the area for twice the length of time that your cat has peed in the spot. Mine had been peeing outside the litter box for about eight weeks. I wasn’t taking any chances.
At this point, I took the cover off one cushion and let the cat adjust to that. I waited two weeks then took the cover off the second cushion, then did the third. My cat has only peed on my couch once since then. The couch wasn’t the target. The blanket I had on the couch at the time was the target. Forunately, the couch stayed dry. Whew!
You have to find the product that works best for you and be very diligent. Cats are very stubborn and you have to be more stubborn than they.

well, one that i know of that works better than anything, is i think its called Enzyme). its from plainville at the janitor’s emporium. i think its found at other ones too but that’s the best one i know) it has kind of a lemony citrus smell but its not very strong-smelling. my cats don’t like but if youre desperate in getting the pee smell out, try it. it definitely works on carpets, furniture and even carseats. i hope it works for you. ![]()
