If they were actual cuts or punctures, I would suspect he was in a tree, and jumped down into brambles or broken glass. If you can\\\’t see any actual cuts or holes, he could have walked in a chemical that burned his paws. In either case, he should be taken to the vet to prevent infection from starting.

What jpete said. He could have slid down a tree, walked through a chemical, slid across pavement (or been thrown) or all sorts of things. How did this even happen? Easy, you let your cat wander around outside unsupervised all night. All kinds of bad things can happen. Keep nightmare inside and only let him out when you can watch him. Get a harness and leash or keep him in a fenced yard that he cant climb out of.

Also, wash his paws well with soap and warm water and make sure not to leave any dirt on them. If they dont heal up quickly or become infected you will need to take him to the vet.

It could be any number of things. From Thorns to Glass. From Fights to Chemicals. From something sharp or maybe something bit him. Maybe He/She might have been chewing on her foot. XD Either way, he/she needs to visit the vet to make sure no Infections or illness would come from this.
