Cats are very smart little creatures, and with a lot of encouragement they can be trained just the same as a dog. It takes quite a bit more work though since cats are such independent little buggers. However, teaching a cat an oral command is usually just something that happens naturally. They hear you say it over and over and they do pick up what you want when you tell them to do something.

One or more of our cats currently know the following commands: No, Down, Up, Come, Lay Down, Sit

But I would never tell you that our cats are trained. They follow those commands when they want to… not every time I as them to. Typical cats! lol!

It’s easy to imagine that your kitty knows “Follow me” if you use it a lot. If you don’t use it a lot your kitty might be responding to a tome in your voice that tell him you want him to come with you. Our cats definitely respond to our tones as well.

If you are interested in training your cat further there are a lot of sites on the web devoted to that.

Here’s a group that was featured in Cat Fancy Magazine to help teach people how to clicker train their cats. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Cat-Clicker/?v=1&t=search&ch=web&pub=groups&sec=group&slk=1

all three of my cats know their names. i can call one of them, and thats the only one who responds. cats are very smart. i taught my male to sit on command. it takes more time with cats, because theyre more independant, but you can train them. i think they can understand the gist of what you say, but not your actual words. i can talk to my cats and they listen. like when they jump up on the fish tank, and i tell them to get down, they listen (usually lol)

I have to agree... most cat's wouldn't understand english very well if at all. Maybe some english breeds but definately not the egyptian breeds. The egyption breeds usually speak in pictographs anyways i think. I guess it depends where the cat is born and level of education, etc.
