Depending on the dog breed, it might be faster. It could probably outrun, say, a dachshund. A breed like a Saluki, Whippet or Greyhound would be *much* faster than any cat, save the Cheetah.

Truth be told, cats are basically sprinters - they are very fast over SHORT distances - usually enough to get a head start and get up a tree in the case of your domestic cat, but over any amount of distance your average dog is going to be faster.

Dogs are built for stamina running as they are descended from the Gray Wolf, which hunts by chasing its prey in a pack until it is worn out and then bringing it down when it is exhausted. That’s why following someone tirelessly is called “dogging” them, because that is what dogs do, basically.

Cats are ambush hunters which means they stalk their prey, sneak up on it very closely and then jump out and take it down after a short chase. They can cover a short distance very quickly but they wear out much sooner than a dog would, so that initial pounce needs to be successful for the cat to catch its dinner.

So no, overall your cat can’t run faster than ALL dogs, though maybe it is faster than some of them.

Cats can run at their fastest THIRTY miles per hour. WHEW, that's pretty fast. I don't know how fast dogs can sprint though.

Depends on the breed. Greyhounds can run 40 - 42 miles per hour and sustain this speed for several miles, whippets clock in at about 35 miles per hour and again can sustain this speed for some distance. Your average mutt probably reaches about 20 mph and again can sustain this for a good while. Cats can reach a *peak* of 30 but only short distances and probably drop off considerably after a football field or two. This page has a lot of animal speeds (with a few caveats - read the bit at the top about how these speeds were measured): http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0004737.html

Your cat can outrun most kinds of dogs. A few it cant are the Saluki, Whippet or Greyhound. The 3 dogs I just used are very fast, and it depends on what kind of breed dog.

A cat can avoid a dog by leaping into a nearby tree, since they are smart enough to know that dogs can’t leap as high as a cat, nor climb.
