My cat Bo a 4 year old Maine Coon, hasn’t eaten in 3 days. He will sit at the bowl but will not eat, I’ve tried wet food, milk, tuna, chuck chicken, and turkey and he will not eat. He will however eat treats, he drank once yesterday and once today. He went into the litter box once today but nothing happened.
He’s also not grooming, his nose is cold and except for a brief second yesterday not runny. I would take him to the vet but due to permanant injuries I cannot afford it right now.
Keywords: not drinking, Not eating, not grooming, sick

You said he doesn’t have a runny nose but is he congested? If so Scott, try heating some wet food up in the microwave as that makes canned food smell stronger. Mix it well with your fingers to make sure it’s not too hot. If he won’t eat it on his own, try smearing some on his paws and on his lips to see if he will lick it off. The main thing with these guys when they’re sick is to stimulate their appetite. You said he will eat treats. So that tells me that he doesn’t have an obstruction preventing him from eating. What kind of treats is he eating? Has he had his shots? There are so many things that it could be. My concern is dehydration. You said he went to the litter pan but nothing happened. Does he feel bloated? Is his stomach hard? That would indicate constipation. I wish I had more answers for you but without seeing him, it could be so many things. Have you checked his temperature? That would be a good thing to do. Your cat’s normal rectal temperature is 100.5 to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep us posted. Email me if you have any questions about how to do his temperature and to let me know if heating the food has helped.

Our vet always tells us in the case of a sick cat....feed them whatever they will eat until you get them past whatever is going on. You can get back to their regular diet once the danger is passed.

Heating up some wet food will almost surely work. That is a great suggestion. I also suggest that you take the cat to the vet. Your cat may have something very serious bothering him.

johnisgood, he already said he can not afford it right now as he has some medical issues of his own to deal with.

Catsofmany has a great idea. If you don't have the money, try the warming up of wet food. If that doesn't work go ahead and feed him treats.

Thank you for the response, I've never been able to get Bo to eat wet food. I was able to give him some turkey today and I brought the water bowl over to where he is laying and he lapped up a good bit. I wiped him down with a mildly damp cloth since he hasn't groomed himself the last 3 days. If he doesn't start eating on his by tomrorow would wrapping him up in a towel and feeding him do the trick?

If you can afford a chicken (and you can roast it for yourself for dinner) you can boil the giblets and neck for the cat. I’ve never seen a cat that wouldn’t eat them. You said he’s eating a little bit (treats)which makes me think he’s probably congested and can only smell strong-smelling things like cat treats. Cats don’t eat much when they can’t smell as they have a poor sense of taste. He probably just doesn’t recognize his food as food because he can’t smell it. Try the chicken giblets if you can, the liver especially is usually stinky enough. And if the cat decides he won’t eat it you can always make some stuffing or soup stock out of it.

Good idea. We baked chicken and ground it up for our sick cats. I forgot about the giblets. You can buy a small bucket of liver pretty cheap at the grocery store.

if your cat is congested he can’t smell his food and probably won’t eat. When my cat had a sinus infection the vet told me to put nose drops in her nose. They were actually nose drops for people but you have to use a specific kind. I can’t remember what they were called but maybe you could ask your vet. Within an hour of putting a drop in each nostril she started eating again. It sounds like he needs to go to the vet. I know you said you can’t afford it but do you have a banfield clinic in your area?? They are really cheap. When i took my cat for the sinus infection i didn’t pay hardly anything….it was like 60 bucks for the visit and the antibiotics.

I called every vet within 20 miles even told them why I'm broke and no vet wants to help. Seattle has a free clinic twice a month but you have to bring your drivers license, and a few bills to prove you live in Seattle which I don't. Washingtons not too friendly, my vet back in Texas would see him for free but that's impossible at the moment. I should be able to call some of the local clinics and check on the nasal drops. I do have a question about congestion, would his eyes or nose look any different? We do have a bunch of chicken breasts, I should be able to bake and cut one of those up. Once again I thank you all for your help.
