Yes they are very bad for cats.
Fleas can cause a variety of diseases, from allergy to zoonoses. Flea infestation can cause blood loss anemia in young or debilitated animals. When animals ingest fleas, parasites such as Dipylidium tapeworms may be transmitted. In these instances, not only do fleas need to be treated, but the tapeworms as well. Some cats have hypersensitivity reactions to flea saliva resulting in flea allergy dermatitis. Flea allergy dermatitis can cause intense pruritis (itchiness) and alopecia (hair loss), especially around the head and neck, over the topline near the tail, and in the inner thighs. Sometimes eosinophilic skin lesions develop. See our article Eosinophilic Granuloma Complex to learn more. Just a single flea or only a very small number of fleas can result in allergic reactions.
Tapeworms are spread by the ingestion of fleas. The flea larvae swallows the eggs from the tapeworm segment. These eggs mature as the flea matures, making the adult flea infectious to the cat. When the cat ingests the flea, the tapeworm larvae are released into the small intestine and so the cycle goes on again. Treatment should include a flea treatment to help prevent reinfestation. The symptoms of this type of tapeworm infection can be, in severe cases, abdominal pain and an increase in food intake. Tapeworms can infect humans so cats should be wormed regularly and a flea control program carried out.

Catsofmany is my mom and I helped her with this answer. I volunteered for a vet for a couple years and saw many cats come in with major skin problems from fleas.
