There are a multitude of things this could be.

The first thing that came to mind, because of Codys age, is arthritis. Cats often develop arthritis and owners do not know because cats are soooooooo good at hiding their pain. If it is arthritis Cody could have been in pain for a long time but outward signs are just now showing. You will need to visit a vet to have an x-ray done to confirm arthritis. There is no cure for arthritis but pain management is very important and your vet could discuss those options with you.

Another thought is that Cody also could have sprained something. Just because he has not been outside does not mean that he didn’t hurt himself. He could have just jumped wrong off of something. Just like humans sometimes twist their ankle, so goes the cat. To determine if it’s a sprain, you can wait a few days and see if Cody stops limping.

Other things that come to mind are just old age. Cats get old and 18 is up there. The body is just wearing out. Bladder problems can also cause limping, as can kidney issues and other internal pain. It’s always best to visit the vet when you can’t clearly determine what is causing an issue with your cat.

Most of the time as cats get older they just limp. My cat Anna had the same problem the vet told me it was fine. Unfortuanatly she died 2 years later but it wasnt for the leg problem.
