Some cats may display a great amount of agitation during labor, though this does not always indicate physical distress. Some agitation during birth is normal. Symptoms such as profuse bleeding, especially if the blood is bright red in color, foul-smelling or off-color discharge, or listless or lifeless behavior on the part of the mother may indicate a serious problem and your vet should be called. If your cat has given birth to a few kittens, and you suspect that there may be more which do no emerge within an hour’s time, your vet should be contacted. It is possible that some of the kittens have become stuck, or that the mother’s uterus has stopped contracting.
HDW Enterprises’ article on the labor and delivery of felines is a good source of information on the subject, covering these issues as well as what to do in the event that kittens are born with health issues (below)

You can tell if she is going in to labor if she starts to breathe deeply and she will meow very weirdly and walk back and forth.
