No, your dog doesn\\\’t need to have puppies. Some (not that smart) people think female cats and dogs \\\”need\\\” to have a litter to \\\”settle them down\\\” or some other silly reason but it\\\’s not true at all. Having litters does not \\\”settle down\\\” an animal or change its personality at all.

Dogs are animals, not people. If you have your dog spayed it will have no interest in mating or having puppies at all. Your dog won\\\’t miss what it never had and won\\\’t know the difference.

There are millions of abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats in shelters today and most of them are eventually put down because there aren\\\’t enough people out there who want them. Even pure-bred dogs end up in the pound or with rescue groups on an alarmingly regular basis.

Your mother is right - your dog doesn\\\’t need to have puppies. Puppies and kittens are cute but they don\\\’t stay puppies and kittens for that long and when they grow up into dogs and cats they are not so desirable anymore and nearly impossible to get good homes for.

Please just let your mother get the dog spayed, it will be better for the dog and everyone else too.

I agree completely with jpete46 & telegramsam.

As fun and cute as puppies and kittens are, there is a serious overpopulation problem resulting in millions of cats and dogs being put to death in our nation\\\’s shelters each year. When we irresponsibly allow our pets to reproduce, those offspring take the potential home of an animal already displaced in a shelter. Often, too, people are blinded by the cuteness & appeal of that puppy or kitten but don\\\’t think about the long-term responsibilities, thus resulting in that puppy or kitten being displaced later in its life.

Be responsible: have your dog spayed.

And just some numbers to help put it all in perspective: http://www.hsus.org/pets/issues_affecting_our_pets/pet_overpopulation_and_ownership_statistics/hsus_pet_overpopulation_estimates.html

Listen to your mother. Usually it doesn\\\’t hurt the mother\\\’s health, but it can (for any mammal). But probably the best reason for her not to have puppies, is the same reason that most cats should not have kittens - there are already too many. If you want another dog, go to a pound or shelter. That way you won\\\’t have to bother your friends trying to get rid of the rest of the litter. And yes, you probably do have one or two friends who would like a puppy - but would their parents allow them to get one? I think \\\”everybody\\\” thinks her puppies would be cute and lovable (good). I don\\\’t think they meant it would be good for your dog\\\’s health or temperament (although it would probably not be harmful in any way either).

NOT spaying the dog CAN hurt it. Pyometria (uterine infection/inflammation) and mammary (breast) cancer can happen in unspayed dogs along with the usual birthing complications. A properly spayed dog or cat cant get pyometria at all and has much less chance of getting mammary cancer. A dog or cat spayed before its first heat has almost zero chance of mammary cancer so early spaying is better. Spaying is definitely better for your pets health than breeding your pets.
