Kittens resulting from inbreeding are less likely to be healthy than those from unrelated animals. They are more likely to have genetic disease and birth defects.

That said, breeders of pedigreed animals often inbreed animals (parent-offspring, littermates, etc) to \\\”set\\\” certain characteristics. This is a problem as you can double up on bad recessive genes that you may not even know are there and end up with diseased animals. A lot of the problems you see in pedigree animals like hip displasia, heart defects, and so on, are the direct result of too much inbreeding.

A lot of pedigree dog breeds especially suffer from terrible problems as a result of careless inbreeding, like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel which has a list of common inherited diseases as long as your arm (check their wikipedia entry if you dont believe me). Cats are less plagued by this but some breeds do have genetic diseases, like polycystic kidney disease in Persians/Exotics and IBD in Bengals. Some traits like the tailless trait in Manx are lethal if two copies are inherited.

So if you cross the mother cat back to its offspring, the kittens MIGHT be healthy, if you are lucky, or they might be sick or deformed. It\\\’s a risky thing to do. And frankly you are better off getting your cat spayed and not contributing to the millions of kittens and cats being euthanized in shelters every year because there aren\\\’t enough homes for them. Even purebred cats often end up at the \\\”pound\\\” when their owners tire of them or move or decide they are allergic, etc.

This can fix certain traits genetically and increases homozygous traits. However it can also bring out the weak genes and create a lack of health and thriftiness that medicine can’t overcome. Too much close blood can result in an increase in congenital problems, smaller litters, smaller adults, lower fertility, immune diseases and losing more to disease due to decreased immunity. This is true whether it is cats, cattle, rabbits or any other animal.

We have 20 feral cats. The father bred with the daughter after his mate was killed. The first litter by the original mate are large cats. The second litter (daughter and father) was smaller and the 3rd even smaller. They were very ill when we first trapped them and it took a long time to build up their immune systems.

By the way, in line breeding….it\\\’s best to breed uncle to niece, cousin to cousin, half brother to half sister, or grandson to grandmother.

Please Spay and Neuter your animals, there are programs that are discounted if you do not have the money. Call your local animal shelter and Vet for information. You should probably consult a vet over this pregnancy.
