How do I know if my kitty is under weight?

7 Answers  |  Asked By: DGirl06   52

He looks okay, but sometimes I think he’s skinny. Are kitty cat’s supports to be skinny? I can tell he eats just fine. And he does his business from 2-3 times a day. Another thing is that last night’s dinner for him was something new, Salmon he liked it because he ate a good portion for a kitty but this morning when I checked his litter box, it look as if he had diarrhea or maybe that he throw up.

Cats are all different, just like humans and other animals.

A large built big boned cat will weigh more than a small boned petite cat. I have big and tall built cats that are a muscular and healthy 19 pounds… and on the other end of the scale I have a teeny tiny boned cat who weighs in at a meer 7 pounds yet she is at a healthy weight as well. Based on their individual body structures I could never compare them. It’s best to assess your cats weight by it’s body condition and not based on pounds or compared to other cats .

Here’s a chart to help you do that…

Great answer, my cat Hiss is two years old and as she was growing into an adult she only grew a little, she's petite and I love her so much, she's my mini-kitty! Thanks for the great chart glad to see she's right at ideal.

that is a great link... if you cant see the link here is an "overal" too thin: you can see his/her ribs/backbone fine: no sight of ribs, but you CAN feel the ribs, no sight of backbone too fat: can't feel ribs, slow walker/runner, sight of "bigness"

The Purina chart is a great reference (one of my favorites) and used by many veterinary offices. Your veterinarian might also tell you to gently run your hands along the sides of your cat to see if you can just faintly feel the ribs. Keep in mind aging and changes in body composition. As your cat ages, the way he or she carries weight might alter due to muscle loss and physical fitness, just as with humans. Watch for rapid weight loss too, in fact, you may want to do routine weight checks at home. Increase the frequency as the years advance. In regard to the post-salmon diarrhea or vomiting; Although it feels good to us to offer special treats, sudden changes in diet and rich foods such as the salmon may cause temporary stomach and intestinal upset in some cats. It is best to stick with a consistent diet and to make any changes gradually and carefully. If you want to do something special, think of offering a tiny amount of a bland treat, or maybe even a fun new toy.

You can tell if your cat is underweight because if you feed her/him something and she never eats it, she’ll probably loose weight.
