Just like humans can get bloated or ‘gassy’ after a meal – dogs and cats can get bloated too. Bloating in humans is far less serious than in animals – as severe bloating in dogs or cats can be a life-or-death emergency!

A bloated stomach for an animal could simply occur as a result of excess gas, fluid or foam, or it could be the result of a twisted stomach (volvulus) or blockage of the stomach valve – which usually requires surgery. Most animals get bloated from too much food. However the condition referred to as ‘bloat’ should always be treated by a veterinarian and is very serious.

Symptoms of common bloating

A slightly swollen belly after eating
Flatulence and excess gas
Belching or wind
When is bloating serious?

If you notice the following symptoms in your pet, you should consult with your vet immediately:

Severely distended abdomen (usually appearing rapidly)
Nausea, vomiting, or attempts to vomit (or retching)
Excessive salivation
Shortness of breath (as swelling puts increased internal pressure on the lungs)
Restlessness and discomfort from abdominal pain (often lying down and getting up repeatedly)
Sudden weakness or collapse or lethargy

Ok I have some bad news the appointment is on Monday, Feb. 1st so she will have to wait longer. Also she puked again. Not to sound horrible but it’s staining the rug really bad and we can barely afford the vets with the economy so we ofcourse we can’t afford new rugs. I’m soo stressed Ican’t think straight.

Try Simple Solution Oxy Solution. Saturate the area and let it set for several minutes, then rub back and forth changing directions. You might have to do it a couple times but it has taken out stains from our beige carpet in our living room.

Why don't you just quarantine her in an area that isn't carpeted for the time being? Make her comfortable with blankets or towels to cuddle in, and just run them through the washer if she gets sick on them. It's only a few more days.

it could be because she is trying to get rid of the furballs in her stomach, my cat does that too. they have a type of jelly that u can give to your cat to help reduce the amount of throwing up.

Cats do not get “twisted stomachs” - this condition is called Gastric Dilation/Volvulus or “bloat” but it only occurs in certain larger dog breeds such as bloodhounds, great danes and irish setters, and also cattle. Cats DO NOT get this condition. Vomiting is not a symptom of bloat even in dogs or cattle, in fact.

Cats all occasionally vomit, usually because of hairballs, but if it is regularly happening, then your cat may be sick or it might simply not be able to digest the particular brand of food you are feeding or is eating too quickly (if it only vomits soon after being fed, either is possible). Either way you need to have your cat checked to make sure it is not seriously ill, as there are many illnesses that can cause chronic vomiting, some lethal.

My cat had a twisted stomach - literally - but that's because she ate a boat load of rubber bands and her stomach expanded and twisted itself to fit around the other organs... :( I didn't know "twisted stomach" was slang for another medical term. Interesting!

"twisted stomach" usually is a synonym for bloat or GDV which happens in dogs when the stomach fills with gas and twists over on itself, cutting off blood supply. It can kill pretty quickly if not fixed by fast surgery. Doesn't sound totally different from what happened to your cat, though the cause (rubber bands) was not the same. But yea, true "bloat" only happens in dogs and cattle.
