I really, really need answers!

This is a very, very awkward question to post on here. Please understand that I am new on cats.com and have a lot of questions built up and I really am happy that there are so many cat people out there that can help. Now, this is very serious, but it may sound gross. My cat Huebert, recently, before his new diet food, was eating whiskas. He absolutly loved it, but it gave him bad chronic diarriah. Everytime he has ever ate it, it has done the same thing. After it all, he won’t clean hiself near his hindquarters. im not joking either! I don’t know what to do because it’s very embarraing. He has a horrible odor as well. I know this is really disgusting and all, but im desperate. I need to know what to do. Ive tried to clean him myself with water and a rag. he didn’t like it at all. I dont even think he can reach his self because he is so overweight! PLEASE please help!

If he’s had chronic diarrhea AND he’s overweight, he probably has ceased cleaning either because it is raw and painful or he cannot even reach. Poor guy! I’m glad to hear that you are taking measures to get his weight back to a healthy range. It will absolutely enhance his quality of life and prolong the time you have together.

Unfortunately, you’re just going to have to clean him yourself, whether he likes it or not. There’s no magic way to get him to clean himself. A warm, damp, soft rag should do the trick. If he struggles, get someone else to hold him securely while you wipe him down.

You say he has a terrible odor - what kind of odor is this? If it’s just from the feces he isn’t cleaning from himself, after you wipe him down, try bathing him. However, if the odor is coming from something else, bathing may not be effective. For example, my B-Rock had a horrible abscessed head wound when I got him… and I can’t even describe the odor it caused… all metaphors I can come up with are highly foul and inappropriate for this website. No bath would have cured that stench. :-( Thank goodness for veterinarians!!! If Huebert (I love that name, by the way!!!) has any kind of infection, that could be the culprit.

(And by the way - Welcome! Don’t feel awkward - we’ve all experienced the less-than-adorable moments that our cats have to offer!!!) :)

Our Persian had a problem with diarrhea and with his long fur…yikes! He is a cat who hates water so it took two of us. One to hold his upper body wrapped baby like in a towel. The other to work at the other end. We just set his butt in the bath room or kitchen sink with enough water to cover the offending area. Rubber gloves to work the poo out of his fur. We used Dawn dish soap premixed with water. Dawn is safe as it’s actually recommended to clean wild birds when they’ve been caught in oil. Rinsing well when all the poo is gone to remove the soap. If he’ll let you after this torture, wrap him again in a dry towel to soak up the water on him. (And we bleached our sink when we were finished….and rinsed and bleached and rinsed again!) :) Welcome to cats.com.

I seem to recall you are using Max Cat. Forgive me if I'm mixing you up with someone else. Max Cat is a product of Nutro pet foods and has been linked to numerous deaths in dogs and cats. Consumeraffairs.com has hundreds and hundreds of complaints about illnesses and deaths. Last fall my 30 cats and 4 dogs all became very ill after switching to Nutro products. Bloody stools, vomiting, weight lost, diarrhea in the cats…same thing with the dogs only they also had increased thirst and began eating grass like they were starved. We had UTI’s in both dogs and cats. Thankfully we switched quickly before any damage was done but many people I know ended up with their pets in the animal hospital for up to a week with elevated liver enzymes. One friend's Pit Bull didn't make it.

Have you considered going with a grain-free food? A lot of "diet" foods like Hills Science Diet are still full of corn and other grain fillers, and for some cats this is what causes the obesity in the first place and often diabetes as well. Kat posted many good brands on this question: http://www.cats.com/question/catfeeding/what-is-the-best-kind-of-food-to-feed-my-cat/?search=food so maybe you can find something suitable there. You'll also want to keep your cat on a regular feeding schedule and not leave food out all the time for him to eat. Figure out how much he should be eating and divide it into 2 or 3 meals a day and don't let him guilt you into feeding him more! Obesity is a very serious health problem in cats and can cause a lot of illnesses.

once, huebert was eating special kitty food from walmart. he started having blood in his stool and really serious sickly problems. i took him to the vet and they said he had an intestinal infection from the food that was later recalled. they gave him meds and he got over it. so maybe this Max Cat food is causing the same thing. thank you so much for your help.

Once I was working at the shelter when a poor little kitty…I think it was a Selkirk Rex…came from a byb. She had matted fur, and on top of that she had a ton of diarrhea. So this is what you do:

1. “Swaddle” the cat’s upper body and hold it firmly over a sink or tub.

2. Just put its bum right down in the sink.

3. Have a helper put on disposable gloves to get the feces out of its fur.

4. Then, rub the area with soap, we used kitten soap so it would be gentler. (Or take Catsofmany’s advice and mix Dawn with water)

5. Just let the water wash off all the soap.

6. Wrap a clean towel around him…and then clean the sink.

Hate to tell you this but you must clean his rear for him. Sometimes a damp clothes will do. Other times it calls for a bath. Now the foul smell could be cause by glands that they have in thier rectum. A vet will be able to tell you that. The vet had to clean it out. Foul smell.

You should try washing him with special cat shampoo if you could buy it and let him dry off for a while(never blow dry your cat, wipe him a little with a small towel and let him run around the house, DON’T LET HIM OUT THOUGH!)

Well first of all he needs to see a vet. The vet will give him medicine to stop the digharria. Second of all, he needs to lose weight. Have you ever tried science diet? If you havn’t try that.
