The Saga of B’s Urinary Tract - Seeking Advice on Urinary Tract Issues!!!
So you may have seen my recent post detailing the urinary tract issues of my cat, B-Rock. They can be found here: http://www.cats.com/question/cathealth/general/anyone-with-experience-with-urinary-tract-issues-in-male-cats/ (and a SERIOUS THANK YOU to telegramsam, catsofmany, & jpete46 for your insight & assistance on this issue!!!!!!)
Well, today marked the vet follow-up visit. After 2 weeks on clavamox (sp?), he is not much better at all. In fact, this new detail sounds worse! When the vet was getting his urine sample, it was “mostly” blood. ARGH!!!
My poor baby!!! So I was given a 2-week supply of Baytril to try (and wouldn’t you know… this one only comes in pill form! This will be my first attempt at giving a cat a pill!!! I hope these Greenies pill pockets really work!!!!). Also, with his drop in appetite, he’s dropped .7lbs in 2 weeks!!! He’s totally disinterested in the prescription diet!
In 2 weeks we’ll go back…
I didn’t get to actually talk to the vet today (just the vet techs) because they were so slammed when I went to pick him up, but she’s supposed to be calling me tomorrow. I’m seriously freaking out over the new issue of bloody urine and would really appreciate any ideas, insight, wisdom, etc. Anything that might appease me while I wait to talk to the vet tomorrow…

I\\\’m sorry about your cat. I know how frustrating this is for you. I\\\’ve been there myself.
I found this great new litter box recently. It\\\’s called the Smart Cat Box. It was designed for kitties like yours. It uses washable safflower seeds instead of litter. Your kitty pees in the box, the urine goes through the seeds into a collection box. You can easily take it out to check your kitty\\\’s urine for blood or collect it for the vet. And it\\\’s very easy to clean. I\\\’ve only been using this box for two weeks. My cats won\\\’t poop in it yet but one of them will pee in it. I\\\’ll admit I haven\\\’t tried very hard to switch them over to this box. I\\\’ve been letting them go at their own pace. However, if you use proper switching techniques (putting the tiniest bit of your litter on top of the safflower seeds), it is a bit more encouraging. I really wish they had this box when my CRF kitty was alive. And I\\\’m trying to switch my other kitties now so I can benefit from this box when problems do come up. Check it out and let me know if you get one. I\\\’d be interested to see how it works for others.

The bloody urine sounds very bad, like his infection has gotten worse. I hope the vet can talk to you soon, and that the pills help him.
Yes, the greenies do work, they\\\’re so sticky it\\\’s like peanut butter so the cat can\\\’t just spit the pill out. Plus I think its better for the pill to be in something to help it go down rather than having the cat just swallow it dry. I\\\’ve tried to swallow pills dry before, it isn\\\’t fun.
If he\\\’s losing weight, I\\\’d feed him something else. The prescrip food is worthless if he won\\\’t eat it. Switch him back to his old food if you have to. It is still much better for him to be eating something less than ideal than to be eating nothing at all. If he\\\’s really gone off his feed, try getting some of the regular flavors of Fancy Feast (not those \\\”elegant medley\\\” ones, those have too much gluten and garbage in them) and see if he\\\’ll eat those, most cats love fancy feast for whatever reason.

larka:
nonono - .7 = POINT seven pounds! I would have been there long before the scheduled follow-up visit if he\\\’d cut his size in half!
I just gave him his first pill this morning (and WOW - GREENIES PILL POCKETS ARE AWESOME!!!), and the vet gets in around 9, so I\\\’ll update when I know more.

UPDATE:
Just got off the phone with the vet… not feeling much better about any of this! My new job at home is to monitor his urine for blood. She told me to just put the tiniest layer of litter in his box so that I can tell if there\\\’s blood in it or not. She\\\’s hopeful that it\\\’s Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (http://www.petplace.com/cats/feline-idiopathic-cystitis-fic/page1.aspx) and that the bloody urine is just a result of the stress of being at the vet\\\’s office, since I haven\\\’t seen it at home. Apparently in cases of this she\\\’s seen, a cat with bloody urine can have completely blood-free, normal urine a few hours later.
If he\\\’s still having issues urinating after 2 weeks of this Baytril, then we\\\’ll do an ultrasound. She said this would show us the walls of the bladder so we can determine if there is any kind of tumor or stones. She said the stones could irritate the walls of the bladder & cause the blood, as could a rupturing mass. Ugh.
On the bright side, his energy & appetite have been back to normal since we got home from the vet yesterday! She reiterated that the clavamox can upset their stomachs and thus reduce their appetite, so between that & the fact that his last weigh-in also included an overly-full bladder, she\\\’s not too worried about the weight drop. He needed to drop about a pound in general, so losing that .7 may end up being a good thing in the long run. The baytril doesn\\\’t seem to bother him at all, so here\\\’s hoping his eating is back to normal now…
I\\\’m hesitant to get too optimistic, though, as the last two weeks certainly had their high points where I thought he was out of the woods. Fingers crossed…

Oh my word, Ziggy! This is truly very serious! He\\\’s lost seven pounds? Have you tried to buy some cheap food like Friskies or Purina Cat Chow just to get him to eat? I can not believe you didn\\\’t get to talk to the vet when you went. Do you think that this pill will help at all, or do you think that this is more then a regular urinary infection?? I\\\’m terrible sorry for what you\\\’ve been going through! Let us know what the vet says.

Ugh… comments…
telegramsam:
Since he\\\’s totally hossed out since he\\\’s gotten home from the vet, I\\\’m thinking his total lack of appetite was more from the last run of antibiotics upsetting his stomach (well, I\\\’m hoping, at least!). I suppose we shall see! I do have his old food in a bowl for him, though… just in case it really is the prescription food that he\\\’s turning his nose up at.

Comment on Ziggy\\\’s comment to my answere:
Good! I was going to say… \\\”Is that even POSSIBLE?\\\” about the seven pounds, and I was suprised that if he did lose seven pounds that he wouldn\\\’t be staying at the vet\\\’s. I\\\’m so happy to hear of the blood free urine, and please keep us updated! Praise Greenies and the vet.

Update #3:
So I was in the middle of cleaning the litter box to replace the litter with a thin layer to be able to monitor his urine… and had just dumped out all of the old litter, when B hopped right into the empty bin & squatted down to do his business!!! That little booger!!! Oh well - I was going to hose it down anyways! And the good news: A full-ish sized amount of urine AND still no blood!!!

that\\\’s awful my previous cat (buster) had something similar he refused to eat and only once did we see him have bloody urine. otherwise he never went at all. i did not really get a vet in time but shortly before this he had a fight with a stray dog and got cuts. has your cat had any cut(s) in a 2-3 week time span?? but i assume your cat was not an outdoor cat who beats up on others sometimes. if he had a cut then could an infection travel in the blood and effect the liver?? my cat had a sad ending only he was 14 years old and was kinda due for it. anyways umm i hope your cat gets better!! my cats way 13 and 10 ponds how did your cat\\\’s weight drop sooo fast?? i know that he wasnt eating but you have to stop for a LONG time to drop like that!! Best Wishes, dafatcat
