There are about a million different things this could be.

Always consult your vet when your cat shows signs of illness.

Continuous sneezing can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection or of a foreign body lodged in your cat’s nasal passages. The good thing about a cat’s sneeze is that it is usually not serious - but that does not mean that you want to overlook it.

In most cases cat sneezing is a normal part of a properly functioning respiratory system, but you should not automatically assume that this is the case. If your feline sneezes a lot it does not necessarily mean that it is sick, but this could be so.

If your cat sneezes for an extended period of time, and you notice other symptoms such as swollen eyes and glands, you will want to visit your veterinarian.

The most common cause of excessive cat sneezing is an upper respiratory infection. Most sneezing infections are caused either by the Parainfluenza virus or the Adenovirus. These viral infections are highly contagious and can lead to a number of symptoms including excess mucus production, swollen eyes and glands, coughing and excessive sneezing. You may notice that your cat started to sneeze after it came in contact with other animals; this is because they probably caught an infection from one of the other animals.

Cat sneezing infections are caused by bacteria such as Bordatella and Adeno-2. Not only do these bacteria cause sneezing in cats, but they can also similarly infect the human system as well.

Just like humans, your cat may be sensitive to certain chemicals that it comes in contact with. You may notice that your cat sneezes a lot when you smoke, use a fly spray, use certain household cleaning products or when you wear a certain type of cologne that is a little bit too strong. This is perfectly normal, and should be expected. Cat litter that contains very fine particles can often be the culprit, as the dust will irritate feline noses.

Persians, and other breeds with flat faces, are more prone to sneezing due to chemicals, product irritation, smoke or infection because of their constricted nasal passages.

Cat sneezing is often only a problem during a certain time of the year. This means that there may be something in the air at that time that causes your cat this problem.

One cause of feline sneezing that is often unsuspected is dental problems such as an advanced tooth abscess. Infections from the upper dentition can penetrate the nasal region and cause frequent sneezing.

Since you may not think to look at your cats’ teeth when trying to diagnose the cause of your cat sneezing, this can often stay undetected for long periods of time. It is a good idea to have dental care as part of your cat’s normal health discipline. This is perhaps the only way to rule out dental problems as a source of sneezing.

Is it just sneezing with no other symptoms? It may well be allergies. If your cat also has weepy eyes and is lethargic, it’s probably an upper respiratory infection, especially if your cat is periodically spiking a fever. My kitten Rose had one of these when I brought her home from the animal shelter and was pretty poopy for about 2 weeks, but it cleared up and she was fine.

I would very much suggest taking your cat to the veterinarian as soon as you can though. Most URIs are caused by viruses and are no worse than a head cold (and aren’t really treatable beyond making sure the cat is warm and hydrated) but some of them can be severe or even life-threatening, especially if your cat has not had its vaccinations yet.

Sneezing that is continuing can be a serious respiratory infection. The cat will become lethargic. It could be allergies. But anyway I look at it a trip to the vet is in order.
