IMPORTANT: Medical Emergencies, Basic Cat Care and Proper Use of This Website

6 Answers  |  Asked By: telegramsam   2004

There have been a few incidences in the past few weeks of people posting questions regarding cats having seizures, strokes, etc.

This is all a bit ridiculous, so I’m just going to get on my soapbox and come out and say it:

IF YOUR CAT IS SUFFERING FROM AN IMMEDIATE MEDICAL EMERGENCY, GO TO A VET FIRST.

Please! Don’t waste time waiting for a non-professional answer that may or may not come on an internet website. Your cat could easily die and it would be your own fault for putting off professional veterinary treatment. We are not vets here, and even if we were, we cannot reach though the computer screen to directly aid your pet. This website is not designed for handing serious immediate problems, that is what your vet is for.

After you get home from the vet if you want advice on some aspect regarding your cat’s needs AFTER THE CAT IS NO LONGER IN IMMEDIATE DANGER AND IS MEDICALLY STABLE then that is a good thing this site is for.

Also to those who cry about not being able to take the cat to the vet for being too poor, simply not wanting to pay for a vet’s services is not an excuse. If you cannot afford to take proper care of a pet, then do not get a pet. That’s all there is to it. Pets are not a Constitutional Right, they are an often-expensive *luxury* and they are LIVING, BREATHING BEINGS that require regular care and maintenance and this requires money, sadly.

It’s one thing if you had income when you first got the pet, then lost your job, but if you just got a cat knowing that if it got sick you couldn’t afford to take it to a vet and just crossed your fingers hoping it never gets sick or injured, then you are being irresponsible in taking ownership of an animal you do not have the resources to care for.

Witholding necessary medical care is considered in most jurisdictions at least in the United States to be a prosecutable offence under animal cruelty laws. Yes, you could be fined, or even sent to jail. It may even be considered a felony, depending, and go on your record to follow you for the rest of your life. Please take that into consideration before getting ANY pet if you are in an unstable or difficult financial situation. There are also vets out there that work with people who have financial problems such as setting up a payment plan or offering services at a reduced cost to those who can prove a need.

Call up the vets in your area and find out who will work with you before you get your cat, do not wait until the animal is having a seizure on the floor or has a urinary blockage that needs immediate treatment.

I really hope we will not be getting any more “Oh my god my cat is dying” posts here because there’s no excuse for it.

*gets off the soapbox*

I agree, I don’t see why people would ask here first, when obviously the rational choice would be to take it to the vet for professioal care.

People post questions like that because they are fishing for an "easy out" or cheap "home remedy" that generally doesn't exist in the first place. Either that or they don't really care all that much what happens to their cat (or at least not enough to motivate them to take the cat to a proper vet) or don't want to pay to have the animal treated. For a lot of people pets are just disposable things, sadly. Either that or it's a kid who just flat out doesn't know better.

Your right on that, too, Telegramsam. I also wonder if they do it jut for the attention to HAVE people "omg rush it to the vet" "you mean person take it to the vet" etc., kinda like trolls but not AS bad. People who just want to get on our nerves and say "what dummies".

Excellent post, telegramsam. It upsets me terribly when I see those questions posted. Time is critical. If we had waited with Busta Blu, he would not have survived that night.

Great post! We were just talking about this over catmail; it’s absolutely ridiculous for people to waste their time waiting for an answer over the Internet that could take hours, be false info, or even harm your pet! Medical conditions are serious, and wasting your time asking complete strangers(some of which claim to be vets who are not) is dangerous and not very smart. Do you and your pet a favor; ALWAYS take your cat to the vet with any injury or illness, for it could save your pets life!

Again– Great post!
