why a cat is born with no eyes?
to those out there who have a cat with no eyes… my precious little “Bump” was born without eyes and is probably the most “able” cat around. Ihave sat and watched in amazement at him catching flies and even birds in mid flight. He can be a shock when he is first looked at but people are generally just curious. To all the blind cats…here’s looking at you!!!

jpete - Echolocation is a rather specific process, and it\\\’s not the same as just hearing things. Cats do have very sensitive hearing though, and they also use their whiskers to find their way around.

Walk into an empty room. You can hear your footsteps, And you can hear the echo of your footsteps bouncing off the walls.

True, but echolocation is an active process, not a passive one. The human (and feline) brain and ear structure are not adapted to this kind of process. Cats have sensitive hearing but they are simply not capable of this type of activity.

I had heard that cats that become blind usually adjust quite well, moving around by sound. But that it catches flies? Amazing, indeed. His mother must have really been something, also. I can only think that they get around using echo-location, like bats, though relying mostly on other noise rather than using their own noise. Of course the flies and birds are really quite noisy on their own.

I read that your BUMP was BORN with no eyes, it must have been love at first sight for you….I do agree with the other comment that they are very sensitive to their surroundings, just glad BUMP uses his other senses to do those amazing things, vidio tape if you catch it, and send it in.
