Cats are susceptible to several types of eye infections, the most common being the inflammation of the soft tissue lining the eyelid and inner eye area. This inflammation is usually caused by either a bacterial or viral infection infection, both of which are contagious among cats. Common symptoms of these infections include runny, watery eyes, redness, swelling, and excessive blinking. Though less common, cats can also suffer from fugal infections of the eye, which present themselves as a darkening or cloudiness of the cornea, the transparent lens covering the eye. These infections can also result in watering, redness and swelling. If your cat appears to be suffering from an eye infection contact your vet for treatment as soon as possible. Only a trained veterinarian can determine what type of infection your cat has and what the treatment should be.
