My one year old male cat has excessive tearing in one eye. No redness or crusty drainage, just tears. Is this normal?

Your cat may also be developing an upper respiratory tract infection. Keep a close watch on him and if he starts sneezing, coughing, doesn\\\’t seem to want to eat, or has a fever, he may need to go to the vet.

It could just be an irritant such as dust, or it could be hayfever. As long as the water appears to be tears (clear as water), and there is no change in the eye or surrounding tissue (such as caused by pink eye or conjunctivitus), your cat should be fine - but continue to keep an eye on it.

It could be the start of conjunctivitus. You could try washing his eyes with tea at blood temperature or use eye drops from your vet. Or it could be your cats breed if it is a longhair. Longhaired cats usually get tears from their eyes. In this case there is nothing to worry about just wash his eyes with warm water so it isn\\\’t sticky and uncomfortable for him.

I wouldnt suggest using tea on a cats eyes. Tea is toxic to cats and could be absorbed through the mucose membrane of the eye. Tea is also highly astringent and would dry out the cats eyes. Long-haired cats do not have this problem unless they are a flat-faced breed like a Persian or Himalayan. Exotic Shorthairs also have this issue, and it is caused by blocked tear ducts due to their flattened faces.
