My best friend found a stray kitten in her yard. I was just wanting to know what the signs of rabbies in a cat are, because I also like to pick up strays and take them home. I don’t want to pick up a cat with rabbies!

Rabid animals—those infected with rabies—may display noticeable signs or behavioral changes. An animal that has bitten someone and is or was acting strangely may be rabid.
It is important to observe the animal when possible in order to provide proper and timely preventive treatment to any person who may have been exposed. An animal that shows any of the following signs may have rabies:
No fear of humans shown by a wild animal
Shyness in a usually friendly pet
Restlessness, excitability, aggression, or sudden mood changes
Excessive drooling
An animal that is normally active at night (such as bats, raccoons, and skunks) being active during the day
Eating substances not normally eaten (pica)
Paralysis, which is sometimes the only sign

If an cat or kitten has Rabies, they will die within 10 days. Usually by day 3 the signs of illness are there. When feral cats are trapped in NH or any stray is picked up, they are quarantined for 10 days. If they are alive after the 10 day period then it is deemed free of Rabies and given a Rabies shot. This is why vets ask you if your cat has bitten anyone in the last 10 days when you take your cat for a Rabies shot and you have to sign a document stating there have been no bites.

Rabies has three phases. The first phase is contracting the disease. Look for any signs that the kitty may have been in a fight. Deep scratches, bite marks, any injury that has penetrated the skin. If so, take the kitty to a vet so blood tests and a viral screen can be done. The kitten would have to be quarantined by the vet until you get the results. The second phase, is not as easily noticeable right away. As stated above, the animals behavior and moods would change. Loss of affection and playfulness, and a steady increase in fear and confusion. The fever takes hold, and the animals appetite would begin to decrease while thirst and water intake increase. By the third and final phase, the fever is at its peak. The animal is completely confused, terrified, and delirious. The bottom jaw is completely paralyzed, leaving the animal unable to eat, drink, or defend itself. The excessive salivation starts in phase two and continues until the animal passes away. The is caused by the fever, and the animals inability to cool itself in anyway. Please be sure your kitty doesn’t have rabies. This is an awful way for any animal to die, and humans can contact rabies too. So be careful, and take care of both of you. Meow for now!
