I had not heard about it, but it doesn\\\’t surprise me. Cats can get a lot of the same viruses humans get, including cold viruses. But there should be nothing to worry about. The flu, for the most part, is spread by coughing and sneezing, and then someone breathing in the virus. The virus can not live very long outside a body. Despite what schools are teaching, washing your hands is not likely to prevent the swine flu, although it does go a long way toward preventing colds and even other flus.

Because the cat in question was a indoor housecat, it is believed that the tabby caught the Swine flu virus from one of its two owners who were also sick. The bad news is that a cat can catch the Swine flu virus from people; however, people can\\\’t get the Swine flu virus from cats.

Cat influenza or H5N1 comes from eating birds, and is a bird flu variation only transmitted between birds and cats via consumption. Cats symptoms include an appetite loss, lethargy and trouble breathing. Grooming is also decreased and a sick cat will crouch on all fours instead of sprawling across an area. This is due to respiratory problems.

While the Iowa tabby did get the Swine flu virus, he is said to have made a full recovery after getting a round of antibiotics and fluids for dehydration. While it is not yet known how sick cats can get from the H1N1 influenza virus; however, the Ames, Iowa tabby survived the flu just fine.
