Ring worms in cats

4 Answers  |  Asked By: ahunt1976   1

I just got a kitten that spent some time by the river and might have ring worms. The reason I think he might have them is because I just got one on my wrist. So here are my questions: How can I find out if my kitten has ring worms? where can I find them on him? How should I treat ring worms once I locate them? how bad of a threat is it to my other 2 indoor cats?

Symptoms of ringworm in pets include:

•Patchy hair loss
•Itchy skin
•Scratching, particularly around the ear area
•Small, round, scaly skin lesions that are visible because no hair grows over them
•Malformed claws if the infection attacks the nails

Some Cats are at Greater Risk for Ringworm Infection than Others
Many healthy adult cats are resistant to ringworm. Cats most vulnerable to ringworm infection are:

•Under one year of age or elderly
•Suffering from diseases
•Free-roaming outdoor cats
•Malnourished
•Under stress
•Afflicted with viral infections or parasites

Ringworm Treatments
If you suspect that your cat has ringworm, take him to a veterinarian immediately for diagnosis and treatment. If ringworm is confirmed, the veterinarian may also check for underlying conditions that may have made the cat more vulnerable to ringworm infection.

Your cat would have hair loss, and a dry, scaly and often red skin.

When we had this problem, our vet suggested an anti-fungal for jock itch. Worked like a charm on the couple of spots we all had. Commitment is the key to success especially if you have more than one pet. Infected animals are constantly shedding spores into the environment (your house) thus disinfection is just as important as treatment of the affected pet. There have been several studies which showed that this fungal infection should eventually resolve on its own. Typically, this takes four months, a long time in a home environment for contamination to be occurring continuously. It\\\’s recommend that you do treatment for this infection rather than waiting for it to go away.

If you saw a worm on your wrist, it was not ringworm. You cannot see a ringworm without a microscope, you will only see the symptoms of this fungal disease as the others described.
