Great cat food brands:
Eukanuba dry cat food
Wellness Core

Pretty good cat food brands:
iams
petguard
blue buffalo

bad cat food brands:
science diet
meow mix
kit & kaboodle
friskies
9 lives
pawfections

I don’t want to waste lots of time going in to why each food is bad, but the foods in the bad list are there because they contain almost NO fiber, and are just full of carbs, making cats obese. They are also filled with fillers such as corn, and contain way too much glutens.

And don't purchase foods that boast "lots of fruits and vegetables." cats are carnivores!!!

Agreed. You can better decide what to choose by the ingredients. If you type in "ingredients" in the ask a questions bar, it will bring up my post of all bad things in cat&dog food. Not that it's possible to actual avoid every one of them.

I'd say Wellness is a tad bit better then Eukanuba, besides the whole "fiber" thing.

I would never feed my cats Eukanuba or Iams. The Company performs animal testing.

Very true larka. Unfortunately there’s no perfect food out there but I still believe Eukanuba is the best I’ve seen and tried so far.

As for by products: By-products, simply put, are the parts of animals people do not normally eat.
For example, if a chicken were raised for its white meat then the remaining meat would be considered a by-product. The by-products used in pet food are an important source of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids. Like all pet food ingredients, by-products from animals or grains are safe, nutritious and approved for use in pet food by federal and state government agencies.

I believe that *chicken* by-products are fine for dogs&cats both to eat(although if I could choose to have it be just regular chicken that we eat, I would). I would never feed my pet *meat* by-products, because it's not telling what *kind* of meat. It could be anything from road kill, euthanized animals, or even deseased animals. Obviously before cats&dogs were domesticated, they ate off of the land and did eat the 'by-products' of an animal (you could say) but those 'by-products' were not euthanized or deseased animals. I don't think Chicken By-products are anything to really worry about feeding your pets as much as things like lots of rice and corn(and many, many more ingredients to stay away from) . Friskies cat food's first ingredients are corn, corn gluten meal, chicken by-product, meat and bone meal(Indoor Delight cat food). Tells you how much Purina really cares about our pets(said VERY sarcastically). Stick with Wellness or Eukenuba, darkwind.

Mistake on my comment-- were not *euthanized* animals; of course there were deseased animals

I totally agree about the meat by products. Most of Purina's foods that I've seen all have corn as their first ingredient. Kit'N'Kaboodle=Ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, soybean meal, meat and bone meal....Horrible food! Many of the grocery store brands are the same ingredients. Iams isn't as bad as it has Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Grits, Corn Meal, Chicken Fat. But I didn't like the two corns as 3rd and 4th ingredients. At least Eukanuba has more chicken as the first 4 ingredients. Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Chicken Liver, Corn Grits, Chicken By-Products, Fish Meal. I think if someone insists on buying their cat food at the grocery store, Iams would certainly be better than friskies, purina, or some of the other cheap foods.

Also, when I posted that ingredient post, it says that Fish Meal is an unhealthy ingredient. I think that bosh! This is what it said: "Fish Meal AAFCO: The clean, rendered, dried ground tissue of undecomposed whole fish or fish cuttings, either or both, with or without the extraction of part of the oil. Like with all other animal sources, if a type isn’t specified, you never know what type or quality of fish is used. According to US Coast Guard regulations, all fish meal not destined for human consumption must be conserved with Ethoxyquin (unless the manufacturer has a special permit). This preservative is banned from use in foods for human consumption except for the use of very small quantities as a color preservative for spices. So unless the manufacturer either presents a permit or states “human grade” fish or fish meal is used, you can be pretty sure Ethoxyquin is present in the food even if it is not listed." Now of course animals can eat meat that's not perfect for human consumption! I wouldn't feed my cat meat by-products, but I'd feel fine feeding them a fish that might not have been the healthiest thing, but still ok for their health in the long-run!

Also, important to remember….cats need meat and fish proteins to provide taurine, an essential amino acid. And feeding an all-tuna diet to cats can rob them of vitamin E and can lead to ‘yellow fat disease.’

As for the more expensive foods….”(You) would like to think that the more expensive the diet, the more expensive the ingredients” — which may sometimes be true. “But expensive also could mean you are paying for a marketing campaign.”

Check the ingredients listed on the bag of SD. The products I looked at listed by products as the first ingredient. It should be chicken first. It also has corn gluten and rice. SD hariball control...Chicken By-Product Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat.... SD hairball light---Chicken By-Product Meal, Brewers Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Ground Whole Grain Corn. So where’s the chicken??? Too much corn and glutens….and animal fat is another poor ingredient.
