What is the weight for a maine coon suppose to be?

5 Answers  |  Asked By: hbh97   18

My cat is a Maine Coon and he is still a kitten but is very skinny because the shelter didn’t feed him well, but anyway I want to know that way I will now if he is under or over weight. So can you tell me how much they are as a kitten and as a adult.

It depends on the cat. The Maine Coon can reach a weight of 22 pounds and a total length of 40 inches – My mother’s cat is 15 pounds.

I have a hard time believing a shelter wouldn’t feed him well. I would quicker say he was starving when they found him as most strays are.

Did they worm him at the shelter? If not I would make sure you get worming meds for him from the vet.

It varies. It depends on length and height of the cat. I think catsofmany is right…shelters don’t starve cats. I’d have him checked for worms. Chances are he was probably emaciated when they brought him in. I cant give you an exact weight but his ribs, hip bones etc. should not be showing if they are he’s definetly underweight. As long as he doesn’t have any other health problems, with regular feedings his weight should stabilize.

It depends on the age of the kitten. My cat was a fairly thin 2 lbs at 8 weeks old when I got her from the shelter, now at close to 7 months old she is a healthy 7 1/2 lbs.

Just get a quality kitten food and feed according to the directions on the label. Most cats are fairly thin when they first get to the shelter due to stress, being wormed, having to eat whatever food the shelter had donated (usually something cheap and low-quality like whiskas or meow mix or whatever) and other possible health problems. It just comes with the territory, unfortunately. Feed your cat something good and he will fill out and grow.
