What you feed and how much you feed, the cat’s activity level and genetics all play a role in weather your cat will be a healthy weight or an obese cat.

If you feed a dry (carb filled) food diet only to an indoor cat, it’s likely your cat will become overweight and suffer from illnesses later in life. Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals are all diet related ailments and run rampant these days.

If you feed a species appropriate wet food diet it’s more likely that your cat will maintain an optimum weight and avoid those diet related illnesses that so many cats sadly suffer from since dry pet foods were created.

As Kat said, it all plays a role but as the human with the control over what’s fed and how much, it’s ultimately up to you!

It’s good that you’re thinking about this now. I had no clue when I got Poppy at three months old, and she rapidly swelled to 25 pounds. Granted she’s a big girl, but she really should only weigh 15 pounds.

Getting cats to lose weight can be done but it’s not easy. If you feed right and in the right amounts you’ll never have to deal with it.

Kat and Beastmaster are all right. It depends on the type of food, how much you give the cat, genetics, and exercise. Most of it can be controlled by you. Try and fit in playtime most days, and find a good portion of food for your cat. You can ask your vet how much to give. But there’s nothing you can do if she’s skinny or fat naturally because of her genes.
