What’s with catnips?

Catnip is a type of plant with small leaves and a square stock. In the wild a cat would chew catnip every week or so if they find a patch because it helps with their digestion. If you go out to a park with wild plants and you live in North America try to keep a look out for it. You can take these stocks, identify them as catnip plants, rinse them and give your cats some of the plants for a treat, a great way to save money from buying dried catnip at a pet store.

There is no cat nip growing around were I live since the population of feral cats alone in Toronto is 50000+. I tried to grow cat nip but as you can imagine the stocks didn\\\’t last long, so I buy cat nip at a pet store. A tip for you: catnip can stale over time, so if you buy it at a cat store, don\\\’t get one of the huge containers unless you have at least five cats. I have two cats, so I get the little packets.

I grew catnip outdoors at home for a long time. The fresh growing stuff locks in the odor, and none of the cats realized what it was until I plucked a leaf. Now I can only grow it where the cats can\\\’t get at it. Some say it is like marijuana for cats - an hallucinogen. It may be, but the effects are more extreme, like the effects of being drunk (different for each person/animal). One might be hyper, another very calm/peaceful, another pass out, another aggressive. Most people consider catnip to be a treat for cats.

Cat nip gives off a certin smell that atracts cats. Cats will roll in them and chew on it too!

Catnip is a herb. When It\\\’s leaves are crushed, it becomes a fun toy to roll around in and play in!
