Well I just want to make sure when we get a cat we can also feed it cheerios when we run out of cat food

Except in very few cases, a cat MUST be fed cat food or it will develop blindness, cardiac problems and eventually die. Dog food won’t do, human food won’t do. Yes there are cats on specialized diets such as raw food diets but those are very controlled and have appropriate supplements. Yes, cats eat mice, etc in the wild but again that is a specialized diet. What’s so important for cats is taurine. This is only found in meat. Cats need quite a bit of it. Humans and dogs don’t. That’s why cats need catfood to survive.
A stray cheerio won’t hurt a cat without food allergies but it should never become a habit or even a significant part of their diet. If you have any doubts about the amount appropriate for your cat, consult your vet.

No. Cats require certain nutrients to survive. A cat fed on a diet of cheerios would die of malnutrition.
If you don’t have enough money to buy food for a cat, then frankly you shouldn’t have a cat.

I'm sure a stray Cheerio wouldn't hurt the cat, but this person is asking if they can FEED the cat Cheerios in the absence of CAT FOOD! That is absolutely not an acceptable substitute for proper cat food.
