Toothache?

4 Answers  |  Asked By: iluvtrixie   41

My cat is just leaving kittenhood. She spreads out her dry food on the ground and eats them one by one. I’ve read that on an adult cat, that’s a sign of a toothache. But is it just a tooth falling out?

I can’t say I’ve heard that but that doesn’t mean it might not be true. However, it seems unlikely that a 1-year old cat would already have tooth problems. Not impossible, but unlikely.

Cats all eat differently. I have one who hoovers up her food in no time. The other one eats very sedately and slowly. I don’t feed dry food but when I offer it as a treat, Sophie also eats one bit of kibble at a time.

So I wouldn’t worry too much. You can always take a look inside her mouth. If you see anything other than healthy pink gums and relatively white teeth with no crud on them, you might consider seeing the vet. But if things look ok, and kitty isn’t drooling or displaying other signs of discomfort, I don’t think you need to make a special trip.

I think that it is perfectly normal for a cat to eat like that. I have had many cats since I was a child and most of them ate like that. In fact, my cat Alissa who is 9 months old eats that way too. So I would not worry about it if I were you.
