i had this problem last summer. i had to temporarily move my cats food away from that room. I treated the area with bug killer, from the entrance they were coming in, the outside of the house, and all around where the food was. i let the area completely dry out for a week before bringing the food back there and they didn’t come back.
There are pet and child safe (and cheap!!!) ant killers you can buy or make. check the links below.
You have to make sure the actual cat food bag is sealed or is in a bag in a container otherwise the ants will just get in there directly.

Don’t use bug spray on the cat’s food because people have done that before and I don’t think that’s a good idea. I went to a site and chose a couple answers.
-Baking powder around the food dish (lots the person says - three teaspoons it says)
-Cornmeal where the ants are
-Lavender because insects don’t like the smell (but another person posted that it doesn’t work on ants but you should try it anyways)
-Chalk around the food dish (lady says ants won’t cross chalk. Weird I know!)
I hope this helps. It’s the best I could do! ![]()

I used to have that problem as well, but no more since I started cleaning the area with bleach. Ants hate bleach and doesn’t harm your cat.
Good Luck.

bleach can certainly harm your cat or you even! it is a toxic chemical you don't want to be breathing in, kids to be breathing in, or your pets to be breathing or licking off their feet...
