Can I feed my cats more than one brand of food at a time? Or can someone help me figure out what I should feed them?

7 Answers  |  Asked By: tsteel2   2

I am trying to find the right kind of food for my cats, but there doesn’t seem to be one brand that satisfies all that I’m looking for. I’m looking for hairball control, sensitive systems, and senior food. Also, small pellets, as my 14 YOA cat doesn’t have more than 3 teeth, and they’re all in the back! I have two cats, one is about 3, and one is 14. Can anyone recommend what I should feed them? I end up buying multiple different kinds of solid food, and mix them together. Senior, hairball control, and sensitive system. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You can find everything you need in canned food. Hairball control - the best hairball control is regular grooming so that the cat won’t ingest as much hair. But in addition to that, feeding more easily digestible foods (such as canned food) will help things along too. If you find that it isn’t enough, add some fish oil to the food.

Sensitive systems - most cats are sensitive to grains which are very common in lesser brands of cat food. Things like corn, wheat and soy are very common allergens. All you need to do to deal with a “sensitive” system in most cases is to feed a grainless canned food.

Senior food - this is a meaningless distinction. Cat foods are not very regulated particularly as it relates to labels like kitten or senior. So don’t worry about this.

Cats of every age need to eat the same thing - grainless meat that is properly balanced to meat their nutritional requirements.

And as I said, you can find all of this in a good quality canned food. See this link for suggested brands: What to feed:

Not only will it help with all of the above, but your kitty who is missing teeth will do better on the canned food for obvious reasons. Since cats don’t chew, eating dry food is hard on their digestion. And if your cat isn’t even up to cracking kibble in two, that’s just going to make the situation that much worse.

Ditto Everything beastmaster said.

Any high quality canned food will fit the profile of the food you want to feed.

Cats were never meant to eat dry food, also known as cereals or kibble. We, humans, make them eat it for convenience to us. It has nothing to do with them or their nutritional needs. It’s completely species inappropriate.

All small domestic cats descended from desert cats. In the wild, desert cats derive their entire liquid intake from their prey. They do not have a thirst mechanism because they don’t need it when eating a species appropriate diet. They get all they need from what they eat. Additionally water was usually not available to them in their desert climate. So they do not often drink water. Regular ol’ house cats have descended from those same wild desert cats.

So in a home environment, your kitty does not get the moisture it needs from dry food and it’s almost always in a constant state of dehydration. Water fountains are encouraged to TRY to get your cat to drink more and your kitty may even enjoy it, but it will never meet its water intake needs drinking from a bowl.

Deadly feline illnesses such as diabetes, kidney failure, obesity, allergies, Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD), bladder stones, kidney stones, urinary tract blockages and Urinary Tract Infections (FLUTD), with and without deadly crystals run rampant these days. Cats are not taking in enough water to stave them off. Proper water intake through a species appropriate diet alone can prevent most of these conditions.

Overall, wet is all around better for any cats diet, be it canned or Raw and they should never be fed dry cereal kibble if we wish to most closely match their wild nutritional and dietary needs. Kibble meets our needs… not our cats.

I recommend varying the diet with a constant rotation of 2 to 4 different brands of canned foods that your cat enjoys. If you do this, and allow your cat the same assortment they would have in nature when eating mice, bugs, birds and rabbits, your cat’s digestive system won’t be so sensitive and you won’t have to run around looking for a specific brand when your store is out. You will have a nice variety to choose from instead.

Canned foods I recommend you consider for your rotation:

It is good to feed you cat diffrent brands of food . But if youre cat gets sick then you should go to the vet about it . Food brands also have something called acid too much of that acid could hurt your cat so look at how much is in there and the ingreadiants. It will help your caat to stay healthy!
