We are often horrified by the vast amount of misinformation concerning toxic foods passed around on internet pet website forums. For instance, we once read a post by a cat owner telling everyone that she fed her cat grapes all the time, when in fact grapes can be fatal to pets, causing acute kidney failure. We’ve seen many similar posts where pet owners tell others that their pet just loves a certain type of fruit or vegetable and that it is absolutely safe for other owners to feed it to their pets.
So here is a compiled basic list of common foods that are toxic to house pets. Some of these foods may jus make them ill while others are very poisonous and are downright fatal. Please note that this is not a complete list but just some of the more common items; just because something is not on this list does not mean it is not dangerous to your pet. We recommend visiting the ASPCA Poison Control Center and veterinary websites for more information. We have found that different sites offer different information, and below are the most common items found.
Tip: While many foods are not dangerous, it is a good idea to avoid feeding large amounts of any one food item.
Toxic Fruits and Vegetables
Stems, leaves and seeds of apples, pears, cherries, peaches, apricots and other fruits (contain cyanide)
Peels, fruit and seeds of citrus fruits
Grapes and raisins (cause kidney failure)
Garlic, Onion & Chives (cause anemia)
Broccoli
Tomato stems and leaves
Pits of peaches and plums
Mushrooms
Avocado
Persimmons
Other Toxic Foods & Beverages
Salt
Macadamia nuts
Cashews
Yeast
Chocolate
Candies, Sweets/Sugary foods
Nutmeg
Tea & Coffee
Alcoholic Beverages

I wouldn’t give my cats fruit either because some fruits are extremely poisonous to them. Like grapefruit you shouldn’t give to them.

Well, I personally don’t think that you should feed your cat fruit, nor even try it. Especially if you want it to be one of it’s main foods. Cats are carnivourous. That means, cats need a source of meat. I give my cats Purina. It is good for cats.

I’ve dropped peices of apples accidentally, and my kitten Keke will run up to them(i’m sure she’s think that it’s a nice juicy chicken) and sniffs it. She’s never put it in her mouth though. She likes yogert though! one time I left my yogert bowl on my bed(whoops) and i came in and Keke was lapping up the rest of it!!! I hope that’s not bad for her!

My old cat, Smudge, loved cantaloupe! That was her favorite food. She wouldn’t eat meat, however. 10 years ago, she died of cancer. I miss her. Well, actually, not really. I was 2 years old! Lol!
