Why are my outdoor cats not hunting?!

6 Answers  |  Asked By: catluvergirl95   860

My semi-feral cats usually hunt for themselves, but recently they have not.
They are lazy and have recently depended on me for there survival and feeding. They are outdoor and it is not winter, because in winter I always try feeding them everyday day. Now theres mice, birds, rats, etc for them to catch, but daily they come to me begging and there scared when I come near, so sometimes I put their bowl out and leave it and the will come and eat.
I have one kitten, Sapphire Ginger Page, Who I caring for, and he is a big enough responsibilty, but when I have to care for all the wild cats everywhere and they do not try and take care of themselves, I cannot continue all the time to feed them, when I have many other responsibilties! Have any idea? Do you know why my outdoor cats are not hunting for themselves.
Oh and by the way, do not think I do not care about them, I feed them when I am not at swork, when I can, but they are depending on me too much, when I have another kitten to take care of, I love them but they are being strange.

all cats have a nanarul hunting skill. some indoor cats go out and catch them like a pro whereas the outdoor cats tend to get used to it and probley find it boring like mine do. try checking the garden over. is there another cat scaring them?
call the vet.
try and put the food outside. buy a lil toy mouse or somthing and fill it with food. pull it along with with string infront of them and them pause. see if they go for it. start bringing it outside. mabe 1 day stop but go outside and make it look like ur pulling it along. maybe they will pounce for a real one and start hunting all over.
THEY MIGHT BE JELOUS OF THE PAMPARED KITTEN!!!!!

They have become dependent on you! At this point, it’s cruel to feed them only “when you can.” Are they all neutered??? If not, you really should contact an agency to get in there and neuter them. There are feral agencies that also set up feeding stations for these cats. And shelters for them.

If you are feeding them, they have probably decided that its easyer just to eat the food you give them instead of hunting. If you feed them about half of the normal amount to feed a cat, they will eventualy get the idea to hunt, for the rest of their meal.
