I must make a 2.5 day trip in the car with my cat who has never traveled except to the vet. Any suggestions?

That\\\’s quite a lengthy trip for your cat! Will you be stopping and staying in hotels at all, or somewhere else he can roam around a bit? I would hate to be cooped up in a carrier all that time!
If he\\\’s normally good in a car, just prepare as you would normally. Make sure you have plenty of water that you can keep accessible to him at all times (or at least that you stop & give him water often along the way), plus food, treats, a blanket to keep the carrier more comfy, and even some toys for the rest stops. I would also consider getting a harness & leash so that you can get him out & walk him a bit at the rest stops. Make sure you bring a litter box, too! For travel, a large tupperware container with a lid makes a great portable litter box. If he\\\’s a good traveler and doesn\\\’t have to stay in the carrier, you can even set the litter box on the floor of the back seat so that he can use it whenever he needs to.
If he\\\’s not usually a good traveler, or in case it turns out after day one that 2 1/2 days is going to be too much for him, bring an extra blanket to put over his cage. That helps to calm one of my cats who gets a little stressed in the car. It cuts out some of the sensory overload that proves to be too much for him. Also consider some Feliway spray. It contains pheromones that supposedly calm your cat down. You could spray the blanket that goes into his carrier with it before you go. That might help. Catnip can also relax cats when they eat it, so perhaps bring some along, as well. Some cats get a bit car sick, so you might want to have some nature\\\’s miracle & paper towels on hand, and maybe some gentle, natural bathing wipes for your cat in case he gets soiled.
For your sake: bring one of those sticky rollers for getting cat hair off of your clothes! When cats get stressed, they shed more. When I get my cat out of his carrier after a car ride, all that loose fur instantly clings to me. Do yourself a favor and have one on hand!
I also bring my brush (well, their brush, really!) with me to help tidy them up after a car ride.
If you have time before the trip, you may want to make some practice trips with him to get him more used to car rides.
Good luck! ![]()

I\\\’m sorry but I have to disagree with a harness and leash unless this cat has been trained to one already. You\\\’re asking for trouble if you put a cat into a traveling situation that has never been on a leash. I would invest in in the largest crate that you can fit into your vehicle. Traveling with cats that have never traveled farther than to the vet can be stressful enough that they will bolt at the first chance they can. When we were trapping feral cats that had to be crated during the training process, we used a plastic dog crate. Looks just like a carrier that you would take them to the vet in, just for a dog. My husband then cut a shelf to place inside the crate. He drilled holes so when the crate was screwed together, it would keep the shelf secure. This gave the cats extra room and at least a little bit of exercise by jumping up and down from the shelf. A couple days is not that bad in traveling. Most cats if they are ok in traveling to the vet without being stressed will sleep on a longer trip. Just give him lots of attention when you can. If he can be trusted out of the crate while traveling, I would do so. But I would crate him before opening any doors or windows whenever you stop.

well if your going somewhere warm put some water and a toy in there if somewhere cold a blanket and troy should do but make sure you know that she is used to being in a car and you will need a cat carrier
