Always use a carrier because you don’t want to take any chances. Sammy will be very scared and could easily bolt from the car or from your arms.
If you don’t have a cat carrier, you can make a secure one out of two laundry baskets. Just flip one on top of the other then tie the sides together with twist ties, bread ties, zip strips, or string. What ever you have on hand. If you use string don’t let Sammy eat it.
It is always best to have a cat carrier on hand though. You never know when you might need it!

A carrier would certainly be a good idea, but a cardboard box with the lid closed, and holes poked in the sides would be just fine.

For safety sake, please by a good cat carrier. Some of the comments I have read here are okay, but I would hesitate to put my cat in anything that really isn’t made specifically for travel. Also, it is a good idea to either use the seat belt to hold the carrier, or put it on the floor. Pets need to be just as safe as you and I when riding in a car. Take care and meow for now!
