Are you referring to your own cat or a cat who does not know you ? Cats are naturally wary - most stray cats will not trust a stranger. If it is your cat did you do something to frighten it ( loud noises , heavy foot steps ) ? Did you try to discipline or punish your cat or give it a bath? Did you do something to yourself that made you smell different ? Feline olfactory organs are very sensitive . If you went to the dentist or the doctor your cat may be able to detects scents you picked up there . Do you have other cats or are there other cats outside ? My youngest indoor cat hides for almost 24 hours everytime cats fight outside ! This same cat runs from me each time I try to pick her up - a habit that has evolved into a “catch me if you can” game that we now play just for fun. Many things frighten cats - hence the term ” fraidy cat” !
