Oh No…….

My friends cat just had five kittens. Four of them were orange and white and the fifth one is gray and white. The mother cat is choosing the gray and white one over all of the other ones. Two kittens died last night because they were being underfed and the mother wont clean them. I have no idea how to help my friend or the three kittens that are left. Please help us. Help the kittens.

You can try to hand-raise the orange kittens using kitten replacement formula (it’s sold at pet stores and in the pet aisle at some grocery stores and places like walmart/kmart) though it’s EXTREMELY time-consuming and difficult to raise a newborn kitten like that. If you have to go to work or school, forget it, they can’t control their own body temperature at that age and need to be kept warm constantly, they need regular around-the-clock feeding and have to be made to go to the bathroom (usually by wiping their behind with a damp cloth, naturally the mother would lick them to make them go, they won’t do it at all otherwise and can die), - it’s like caring for a newborn infant for several weeks before they are old enough to be left alone for any amount of time, much less 8 or 9 hours a day while you are at work/school.

If you do actually have the resources and time to do this, now your friend needs to ask him or herself - is this worth it? Can they find homes for these kittens when they grow up? Can they afford to have them spayed or neutered and vaccinate? You at least need to have the mother cat spayed after she weans her litter, if you can’t afford even to do that, you definitely don’t need to be keeping these kittens.

If mother cat is caring for the grey kitten, leave the grey kitten with her. She will raise it herself. If she’s rejected the other two, there isn’t anything you can do to make her accept them again. The mother may have rejected the kittens because there is somehthing physically wrong with them. You may not be able to tell just by looking at them either, but the mother can smell/sense things you cannot. They may not survive no matter what you do if they are weak or have a congenital birth defect and dragging out their suffering is not doing them any favors. It may be more humane, frankly, to just have a vet put them down. Don’t try to rear them just because you feel sorry for them. It’s always heartbreaking to see such a helpless little thing die but sometimes the alternative is more cruel.

Actually you can get the mother cat to accept the ones she kicked out if you do it soon and be persistent. My friend and I witnessed a mother cat giving birth. She kicked a calico kitten from the nest. We kept putting it back. Over and over....while she was nursing the others. She finally started cleaning the calico and the little one grew up to be a beautiful cat. We've had mother cats that were caring for a litter and we introduced abandoned kittens to that cat. She accepted them into her litter.

If you can't stay at home all day to hand feed them, then it would be best to surrender them to an animal shelter where they will be found loving homes.

I handraised my female and I loved it but like telegramsam said it is extremely time consuming. When I did it i was engaged and all I did was stay at home anyways so I had plenty of time for her. You have to feed them with kitten formula every 3-4 hours,as young as they are I would say 3 for now. You have to stimulate them to use the bathroom and keep their body temp up with blankets, you can use hot water botttles etc. It really is alot of work but if you have the time and want to do it,go for it. But what telegramsam said is also very true, the mom may have rejected them b/c there’s some thing wrong with them. I handraised my girl because her mother was killed, before that happened the mom was caring for her just fine.

I agree with the person above me, hand feeding them is probably their best bet at this point.

I sounds as if the mother has rejected them…I’m not sure why, though. I agree with telegramsam, your best option is to hand feed the kittens. But it is a huge responsibility. Good luck with those kittens! Best wishes!

A domestic cat who's used to humans will not react to the smell of its owner on the kittens. The myth about birds is just that - *a myth* - most birds have a very poor sense of smell, some have none at all, and they will not reject a chick because it's been touched. I think the source of this myth is that some *mammals* will, such as deer who will *sometimes* reject a fawn if it has a foreign scent on it. But no, if you touch your cat's kittens it will not make it reject them. Breeders commonly aid their cats in giving birth and handle the kittens from the time they are born so they will be accustomed to handling by humans.
