Tap water is generally safe for both animals and humans if you are on a city water system. If you are worried about it, you can get a water filter like Brita that goes on the faucet and filters out impurities. If you have well water you can get this tested for metals, chemicals and bacterial contamination by a company that does this.
But generally, yes it is safe.

Tap water MIGHT be safe for cats. Check with your city to see if your cities tap water has many chemicals in it, such as sulfur.

Water departments in the US are required by the EPA to meet certain quality standards. They don't always, though, and the safest thing to do if you are worried about it is get a filter for your faucet. If they truly do have elevated levels of impurities, then contact EPA and make a complaint. http://www.epa.gov/ow/

Chlorinated water is a known cause of cancer for humans and animals. If you have municipal water that is chlorinated, don’t drink it straight from the tap or give it to your pets. Chlorine will dissipate when left in a bottle or jug - uncapped for at least 24 hours. This only works with chlorine and does not work with chloramine, as chloramines don't evaporate. Many cites have changed over to chloramines as a disinfectant instead of chlorine because they claim it’s safer than chlorine. You can always contact the water department to see what they use in your area. I worked for a water consultant company for a couple of years that installed water purification systems. I did this with our water for our safety as well as my fish tanks when we lived in a town that chlorinated the water.

Obviously, if the water in your home is unsafe for human consumption, we should not be giving it to our pets. Many of the same illnesses and diseases caused by toxic taps apply to pets as well as humans. What to do? If you watch the evening news, you’ve probably learned that bottled water is not all it’s cracked up to be. Bottled water has even fewer regulations than city tap water, and often the water you buy in the supermarket is water from the tap, not from the beautiful mountain spring pictured on the label.

I agree with you, water from "mountain springs" are usually just tap water, however, sometimes they are purified to some extent.

My dad, coming from the filter plant for our town water, wouldn’t suggest either human nor animal drinking it! It’s filthy, our at least our tap water is. If you live out where you get well water, then it’s fine. We don’t unfortunetly, so we spend large sum of money and water for us, and the animals. I personally would not let your cat drink tap water. It has BAD chemicals in it that you don’t know about such s chlorine to kill germs. Hope this helps.

Just because it’s a well doesn’t mean it’s safer. Dug wells (also called shallow wells) for example may have contaminates in it because they are so close to the surface. Drilled wells have less chance of becoming contaminated because they are so much deeper and generally safe to drink, because of natural filtering through the soil and rock. However, chemical contamination is possible. Pollutants like motor oil, paint, and lawn chemicals can enter old wells through storm water runoff or deteriorated well casings, contaminating our groundwater. Wells should be tested periodically.

Tap water is perficlly fine for cats! but if you dont drink it why would you treat your cat worse? Cats love clean nice water! i give my cat water from the bottle because i think he deserves to have clean water! i love my cat and thats how i treat him with respect!

dont animals have stronger imune systems - thought maybe it wouldnt be harmful to them

ggsexy - animals in general have very good immune systems. But the immune system does not help in any way with chemicals - a reaction by the immune system to chemicals would usually end up as an allergy. The immune system mostly works against living things (bacteria, viruses and fungi), but is not strong enough to work against all organisms.
