Keep them separated unless you can supervise them. I certainly do not agree with keeping the dog outside! Dogs need to socialize with their owners and being kept outside is a terrible thing to do to a dog. We had one feral that hated our dogs. It took over a year but they co-exist now. We\\\’ve had several cats that hated the dogs and would attack them. We made sure they were only together under supervision with a spray bottle handy. If the cat attacked the dog, the cat got sprayed. I know people who have used the same technique on the dog that hated the cat. We have 3 German Shepherds, one Pit Bull and 30 cats. The dogs are INSIDE, not outside dogs. The cats are inside cats. With patience you can teach animals to live together. Use common sense and protect whoever is on the receiving end. You didn\\\’t specify if one of the animals is the aggressor.

You need to socialize both animals. They probably won\\\’t be friends but they will coexist. Keep them separated when you are not around. Schedule supervised visits. Start out with the cat in a kennel and let the dog sniff all he wants. It\\\’s normal if the cat hisses at him. As part of your visits put a little bit of cat food in a bowl inside the kennel and place another bowl with dog food outside the kennel. Have them eat together but with a physical barrier (the kennel). Slowly, you\\\’ll see your dog lose interest in the kennel and the cat. Then you should be able to have visits without the kennel. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT NOT TO LEAVE YOUR DOG AND CAT TOGETHER UNATTENDED. This process takes a couple of weeks but if you stick to it, you\\\’ll probably get positive results.
