I’m very sorry your cat has injured itself.

The best thing for you to do if your cats skin is hanging off his paw pad as you describe, is to get him to the vet. Your cat may need antibiotics to prevent infection and a covering on it’s paw intil the skin grows back.

Hi monty101, I`m sorry about your cat. To find out what to do about your cats paw you will need to ask yourself questions.
First question you ask: Is your cats paw swelling? If it swells a lot when he first gets the cut, but swells down eventually, it can be an assortment of things. It it is swelling for over 24 hours it is infected, and you need to bring your cat to the vet.
Next question: Is the cut painful? This may be hard to find out because your cat has a natural instinct not to reveal pain. Do NOT put your cat into more pain just to find out.

If the cut is less painful it`s a bee sting. In your case what you described does not sound at all like a bee sting so I will move on.

If it is more painful go to the next question.

Last questions: What other animals are their around your home? Could they have given your cat the cut you see?
If you suspect that the cause of your cats cut is the bite or sting of a spider, scorpion or related insect bring your cat to the vet immediately. Some spider and scorpion stings and bites are worse then others. You can`t determine what sort of insect or arachnid bit or stung your cat until you reach the vet.

If you suspect another cat, a racoon or another animal you should also bring your cat to the vet. bites and scratches from these animals can quickly become infected, or worse, when left to heal on their own.

If you think it is just a scrape, how you deal with it will vary on how bad the scrape is.

Side note: If their are any imbedded objects in your cat`s paw(claw, thorn ect.) DO NOT remove it. Bring your cat to the vet. If you attempt to remove the object on your own you can damage more tissue (hurt the cat).

Other side note: NO NOT give your cat aspirin, tylenol or old antibiotics. Tylenol in particular can be fatal for cats.

Cats, dogs and most other animals will lick injuries instinctively to help keep them clean (this is also why animals with stitches must wear those big collars, to keep them from pulling out the stitches) but this does not mean it cannot get infected. Find out from your vet what should be done with the paw. I know products like neosporin are good for people but they may not be for cats, which would probably lick it off. If your vet has a recommendation on this, follow it. It should be safe to wash the wound out with warm water and a gentle soap though, if there is any dirt or debris in it this will cause infection and should be cleaned up ASAP.

We have used Neosporin on cats and dogs per our vet’s recommendation. Also the liquid bandages and peroxide. BUT it’s best to have a vet check the wound as infection must be treated with antibiotics.

It’s normal for them to lick it. Wash the paw off with clear water. Watch for swelling, if it swells the cat will need to go to the vet because the cut has got infected.

Yes, and also if it becomes red-looking and inflamed. Severe infection will cause it to ooze pus as well or there may be a bad smell. Any of these things should be a red flag for a vet visit.
