SAFE SCREENS ON WINDOWS

7 Answers  |  Asked By: animalover   225

My mom got a call from a friend of hers in Florida that they lost their cat. She would lie in the open window but the screen was not secure. The cat fell out and got lost. They finally found her after 5 days. They were lucky! I know it’s winter but many of you live in warm climates. Be very careful about your screens. Some screens are a cloth material that a cat can rip very easily with their claws. The other problem is some screens are only held in by very weak hooks. The same goes with screened slider doors. We bought a pet screen from Home Depot and replaced all of our windows and screen doors with this very strong screen. Four dogs and 30 cats and the screen doesn’t have one rip in it in 4 years!

I quite understand your concern about hoarders!!!!!!! BUT before you speak, perhaps you should ask the vital questions…..Yes, they are all fixed. Yes, they have all their shots….Yes, they go to the vet for exams on a yearly basis! Yes, they are all healthy…(now!) Yes, they are indoor cats. NO, none of them have given birth at our house because we failed to spay them! 20 of them are feral cats my husband trapped. They were too old for what our local shelter felt to be adoptable. 8 of them came from the local shelter because they were “special” cases that the shelter wanted in a good, safe home because of their special needs. We have rescued 158 cats and only kept the ones that were un-adoptable. I have kept a log with dates, names and pictures of the adoptable cats we adopted out or took to the shelter for adoption.

Our vet makes a house call for the few ferals that are terrified of being in a cat carrier. Another vet who we use in an emergency if we need a house visit has been in our house. Our horse vet, a different man, has been in our house as well. Our Animal Control Officer, a friend of mine, has been in our house. Three people who run the local feral cat rescue agency have been in our house. Not to mention the numerous other people involved in rescue that have been in our house. And all have stated our house does NOT smell and you can’t even tell we have a cat….let alone 30.

We finished our basement adding a bedroom downstairs for our daughter and a cat litter room, a room called the cat den that has condos, scratching posts and a dining table for the cats. The cats have both upstairs and downstairs to roam around. Cat beds and scratching posts on both levels.

I have posted all of our cats on photo bucket. Any doubts about us being hoarders…go check out their pictures. I have listed the link under my profile. They are all healthy! Hoarders cats are sick, not neutered and no vaccinations.

So please, next time before you jump to conclusions and used that dreaded word…ask.

If you’re wondering why I answered this, it’s because animalover is my daughter. We work as a family with these cats and have dedicated our lives to rescuing animals in need.

What is a hoarder?
• Accumulates large numbers of animals
• Fails to provide the minimum in terms of husbandry (nutrition, sanitation, shelter and veterinary care)
• Fails to act on or remedy the deteriorating conditions of the animals or the environment, even if the animals are starving, ill, or dying
• Fails to act on or remedy the negative effects that the hoarding is having on their own health and well-being, or that of other members of the household

“There is a great disconnect between what the hoarder thinks, and the reality of the situation”, says Dr. Anne Sinclair, veterinarian and owner of Cat Sense Feline Hospital and Boarding in Bel Air, Maryland. “They believe they’re providing good care, when in fact, the animals are usually starving, diseased, and dying.”

I am an Animal Rescuer…

My job is to assist God’s creatures
I was born with the drive to fulfill their needs
I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures without planning or selection
I just follow where my heart leads…

I have patted a mangy head with my bare hand
I have bought dog food with my last dime
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid
I have fallen in love a thousand times…

I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count
I have buried them with loving hands
I will not pass by any animal hurt or lost
That is what my life demands…

My heart aches for all these creatures
I will hand raise a field mouse
And make friends with a vulture
And not hesitate to lend them my house…

I want to live forever if there aren’t animals in Heaven
I know of no creature unworthy of my time
But I believe they must be there
Why would God make something so beautiful and leave it behind…

War and abuse make me hurt for the world
Another day, another rescue to find
And when a rescue “makes the news”
It gives me hope for mankind…

We are a quiet but determined army
And we are making a difference every day
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan
Nothing more rewarding than saving the life of a stray…

No greater excitement than watching them thrive
No greater joy than seeing a baby play
Who only days ago, was too weak to eat
The difference of love and just a few days…

By the love of those who I’ve been privileged to rescue
I have been rescued twofold
I know what true unconditional love really is
for I’ve seen it shining in the eyes of the young and the old…

My work is never done
My home is never quiet
My wallet is always empty
But my heart is always full…

I am an Animal Rescuer…

You kept you cool, Catsofmany. Not sure I would have if someone called me a hoarder.

It brought the hairs up on the back of my neck! My mom, dad and I are very dedicated to our cats as well as all the animals we rescue. We have dealth with a kitten and a cat from the homes of a couple of hoarders. One had 20 cats and the other had over 30 cats and kittens in a 2 room apartment. They both started with a couple cats that they couldn't afford to fix. The cat, Austin, died of Leukemia. The kitten died with FIP. The yellow cat is Austin. STORM & AUSTIN

Bear, the little brown kitten, was the one that died with FIP. His brother Bear lived to be 8 months old but the other kittens all died younger. NO cats survived from that household!

That’s wonderful that you checked and will be reinforcing the hinges! Nice to hear! My mom lived in a second story apartment with terribly cheap screens! She was at risk of not only losing her cats but injury to them as well. Thankfully, she no longer lives there.

Wait. 30 cats? That is not right. Make sure you’re not hoarding.

Thanks for the tip. I have a screen door that my Dinah likes to lay by. I’ll be re-inforcing the hinges because, turns out, they are very weak.
