Have a 6 year old black cat, Baby, had her since she was 6 wks old. Always been in the house, but, moved in with my Mom and now she is outside. She became pregnant and had a kitten. Question is: how long is kitten dependent on the mother and how long with mother take care of kitten? Kitten now has eyes open and mother has brought her out of hiding. Thanks for any and all answers.

Kittens need their mothers until they are 8 weeks old. Some believe kittens should be with their mothers until they are 12 weeks old. Kittens may not leave until they are a minimum of 12 wks of age. Stress can make a kitten more suseptible to illness.
Kittens are eating solid food by a young age. They gain emotional stability staying with mom until an older age. Studies have also shown kittens weaned and removed from their mother at an early age have more health issues and a shorter life span.
