I’m just curious because I’ve have recently seen two cats called Lucky and Polly around who both have this mutation (polydactyl is where cats are born with more toes then their are supposed too). I always thought Polydactyl was rare but now I am not so sure.

It appears to vary between breeds and regions of the world (supposedly more common on the East coast & Western Brittain). Here\\\’s a great article on polydactyl cats: http://www.messybeast.com/poly-cats.html

polydactyly first found in Maine Coons. 40% of all Maine Coons have polydactyly. If usually runs in the genes of the parents. But sometimes a kitten will be born with polydactyly. This means another bloodline of mutated cats have started. Make sure the owner of Lucky and Polly get them spayed/neutered. That bloodline will stop if you stop them from mating.
