I have a feral cat that I have cared for for five years.
I would like to be a friend to the feral, but he won’t let me touch him. He hangs out with my out door cat. What can I do to be able to pet him?

We used cooked boneless chicken when we’re taming our ferals. Cut it into small chunks. Sit quietly on the ground as ferals feel more secure if you’re not towering over them. It also works well if you an lie down on the ground. You become less intimidating. . Put small chicken pieces leading up to where you are. And wait quietly.
Try not to look at the cats directly before they are fully comfortable with you. To a cat, eye contact and watching is aggressive and will cause them to be nervous of you and the situation. While you sit with them, read a book or do something else quiet, but don’t watch them. If you do look at them, try to keep your eyes toward their hind end and avoid eye contact as much as possible.
You may never be able to touch him. But he may eventually take the chicken from your fingers. If he takes the food, don’t try to touch him. If you try too soon, it will take longer for him to approach you again.
Always move slowly. At some point when the cat is near you, try massaging the skin on top of the cat’s shoulders and the back of the cat’s neck. This is thought to release endorphins and make the cat think that when you are near, she feels happy and relaxed. This is the way mom cats carry their little babies. This is similar to scruffing a cat and it also thought to block pain.
Do not touch or pick up a feral or semi-feral cat or kitten until you are absolutely certain it is ready. Even a very young kitten can hurt you badly. Seek medical attention for all bites, and watch scratches carefully.
We have 20 (inside) feral cats that my husband trapped at a local dump. They were all ages from 7 weeks to 6 months to 18 months to the dad who was over 2 years old. There is only one that we can’t touch but she will take food from our fingers.
Ferals are dear to my heart and I wish you the best of luck to befriend this special kitty.

We live in a rural area where a lot of people drop off cats. I’ve had several ferals that I have managed to befriend. The first thing is try to be patient. Feral cats have to build up trust to let you touch them. I put food out and then gradually sat on the porch with the dish. Over time, I was able to pet the cats. They just need to be be assured that you are okay and won’t hurt them. Some ferals will never tame too much though, and this is sad. The younger the cat, the better chance you’ll have of becoming his/her friend, atleast that has been my experience. Good luck!!

hold your hand out and try to be very still, and wait till he comes over and sniffs you. then if he stays give him a gentle rub.
