Q: We have a stray cat that is 5 months old. Her gait is off when she walks, she will not jump up or off of anything, she is extremely weak, twitches her ears, barely moves her head. She has had several tests. She is negative FIP Virus, Negative Leukemia, Negative AIDS, XRays show no abnoral growths, Bloodwork appears good. She isn’t very active. Barely eats and barely uses the bathroom. We are at our wits end on this and we are worried about the cat. Does anyone know what could possibly be wrong with her?

It sounds like it MIGHT be a neuroligical problem, not one I am able to correctly diagnose. Has the vet checked the entire spine for abnormalities? Specifically up by the head? Or the inner ear? Has she been check for heartworm? These are things that I would also check. I’m assuming that her heart is okay as well. These are my thoughts I’m hoping that someone with a better veterinary background might answered you as well. Good Luck to you and Kitty.

Thank you all for your answers. Although, I am also a cat owner (I belong to Marcella) this cat actually belongs to a friend of mine from work and we have been trying to search for answers. He and his wife and daughters had been trying everything possible for her. They ended up taking her to another vet last night and it was actually diagnosed as a neurological problem. I do truly appreciate your answers. They had to put the cat down because she was in constant pain. His family (wife and 3 daughters) are taking it very hard. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Again, thank you all...I will definitely use this site for my own little girl in the future.

I don’t know where you live, but have you seen any blue-tailed lizards in your area? They’re generally black with red and yellow stripes and a blue tail. These particular lizards are poisonous to cats, who unfortunately love to catch them. They cause the cat neurological damage, which cannot be reversed. It will make them walk leaned to one side as if they’re about to fall over and maybe walk into walls. Their head will always be sideways from then on. My aunt actually had it happen twice to her cats, so you may want to look into the lizards in your area. If that’s what happened, I’m sorry, but there’s nothing that you can do for your cat. She shouldn’t get worse or die. She just won’t get better.
