Yea, I would say the best time is *never* as outdoor cats can be run over by cars, killed by stray dogs, other cats, and wild animals, they can also get FIV from fighting with feral cats and other diseases. Your cat could also be stolen if it is friendly with strangers, someone could easily think it was lost or dumped and take it home for themselves. I really can’t recommend letting cats outdoors at all unless they are on a harness and lead or in a safe enclosure.
If you absolutely have to let them out, I’d wait at least a month so they’ll consider your new house their home and not try to go back to the old house (though frankly some cats will always try to get back to where they were originally, so your mileage may vary)

I agree with telegramsam that "never" is the best time. Now is the perfect time to adjust them to indoor living only as they must stay in for at least a month. Why take the chance ot them trying to return to the old home and getting hit by a car? Or stolen. Or picked up as a stray and ending up at a rescue facility. And butter is a myth. It does NOT work if you put it on their paws.

Never IS the best time. If you let your cat out, it may try to return to its old home, or it will get hurt or abused. Not trying to scare you, but there are some people that kill cats for fun. :(

hey its mcroni! my cats are sooo used to being out side that we cant *never* let them out. But... there is no chance that any of our cats will get killed *so I am keeping them in for a month!!!* but anyway, thanks for the advise! :) By the way the house we are moving into has 5 rooms upstairs(not includeing upstairs kitchen and bathroom),6 rooms downstairs, a garage, a huge cellar, and a backyard!!:)

How can you possibly say that there is "no chance" that any of your cats could get killed while outside? You have zero control over their outdoor environment if they're allowed out without supervision or a protective enclosure. There are so many possible dangers outside - there is absolutely a chance (and a high one at that, as outdoor cats have a much lower life expectancy!) that your cats could get injured or killed! Trust me - they get used to being indoors. Both of my cats started their lives as predominantly outdoor cats. They adapt. :-)

you can train any cat to stay indoors. of course they will want to go out for awhile. they will probably sit at the door and whine to go out. if you play with them alot indoors to get rid of some of their energy and make it fun for them to be inside eventually they will get used to being indoors. i do let my cats out on the balcony with me for a little while to get some fresh air(never unsupervised) and that seems to be enough for them. i have done the harness and leash thing too when my female was a kitten…she liked it for awile but now she has no interest in it. she’s content being indoors.

Also, if you think your cats need to be outdoors, you can do what I did and buy a cat harness and a leash, I take my cat out to play in the grass on hers and she takes me on walks
It’s a good way to get your cats fresh air WITHOUT them getting killed. My cat took to it almost immediately, once you get your cat used to the harness it’s easy, just put it on and distract your cat with treats and play with them with toys until they quit noticing it.

OH! I totally forgot to mention it. That is a great idea, and I do that with my cats.

LoL - she takes YOU on walks... HOW TRUE!!! When I used to take Vespa out on the harness, she would try to drag me into bushes and other foliage... :-)

I am with everyone here…please try to keep your cats indoors! I adopted a kitten that was born to a feral Mom and we brought him in at 4 months old, after he had been “fixed” and gotten his shots. He had a period of adjustment (naturally), but now, he is perfectly happy as an inside cat. Also, there is a big controversy here in our town about people “letting their cats run free”. It is creating quite a stir with people complaining about neighbors not “controlling” their cats. (Yeah…right.
) Anyway, it is better to keep them inside away from danger, disease, other aggressive cats, and neighbors. Good luck with your move!
