Litter Box

4 Answers  |  Asked By: mamamia321   65

Is it O.K. to train your cat to go on his litter box WITHOUT litter? I trained Mow-Mee, my cat, to go on plain newspaper which I put in his box. This way, it saves me big bucks from the cost of litter.

But, you have to BUY litter. You don't have to buy newspaper! You read it once or twice, then allow your cat to use it.

Sure… but (aside, like babanim1 & morthedork said, from wasting trees, an important natural resource) that newspaper is probably not as absorbent, and you’ll probably have to swap it out much more frequently than if you got a good clumping litter. That could add up to about the same cost as you would have spent just getting litter! Plus, with the paper, the urine will soak all the way through to the base of the box, leading to more frequent cleaning to combat the smell.

Totally up to you, though! It is doable!

you're right about the urine leaking, but it does absorb nicely. It is not wasting trees, because what will you do with the newspaper after you read it? Throw it away most likely. I let my cat use it! And, at Atlanta, where I go quite frequently, has a lot of free newspapers! If I don't take some, they throw them out! So it is not wasting trees!:)

Sure…I guess. It’s sure a great way to save money but I am a big conservationist and it is kind of wasting trees in some sense. But it is also like recycling.
